A documentary-style comedy-drama follows a group of people living on the fringe of society. At the group's core is Derek Noakes, a tender, ingenuous man who works at a retirement home. His love for his job and the people he cares for is evident in everything he does. Derek is in his 40s and is vulnerable to being ridiculed and ostracized because of his childlike nature, diminished intelligence and social awkwardness. Among his co-workers at the home are Dougie, his friend and landlord, and Hannah, his best friend who is smart and hard-working but unlucky in love. Writer-director Ricky Gervais stars in the title role, which is based on a character he created for his stand-up routine.

Though "Derek" still has moments of sweetness, much of the romance from its initial go-round has vanished, replaced by crude jokes. Go to Full Review

An episode of The Office or Extras would be wasted on Derek; he's completely happy when he's watching an online video of little piggies and bunnies doing cute things. Derek has all the creative ambition of one of those videos. Go to Full Review

Derek is a poignant and funny character sketch. Go to Full Review

Unfortunately, Derek is less comedy and more tragedy, the biggest tragedy being Gervais's flailing attempt at a follow-up to earlier successes. Go to Full Review

The new series of Derek opens with brilliant comic scenes about spiders, electrocution and sex between clowns and chimps but, by the end of the half hour, viewers just might be quietly weeping. Go to Full Review

Leave it to Derek to make grabbing a used pregnancy test from the garbage, holding it up and announcing someone else's pregnancy a heartwarming bit of TV. Go to Full Review

See more Petros T @PetrosTserpelis 12/27/2019 (all seasons) Gervais has crafted some interesting characters in "Derek", leading to several resonant moments, also thanks to the really good cast, yet the mockumentary style feels redundant, the laughs are few and the writing seems careless at times: the budget cut that is established early on magically never becomes a problem, hardly ever being mentioned again. "Derek" plays like a variation of what Gervais has done before: the trademarks are there ensuring the good quality but the spark is largely missing.
