In a divided Germany in 1983, naive 24-year-old East German soldier Martin Rauch is pulled from his benign post as a border guard and given a new assignment: undercover spy for the Stasi foreign service in West Germany. Hiding in plain sight as Moritz Stamm in the West German army, Rauch must gather NATO military secrets. As he veers between father figures, love interests, and East and West Germany, nothing is quite what it seems and everyone he encounters is harboring secrets, both political and personal. The coming-of-age story -- created by American journalist and author Anna Winger and her German husband, Joerg Winger -- is the first German-language drama to be aired on a major U.S. network.

See more John T @Thrash 04/26/2023 The final season was a real let down from the previous two. The opening of the border and Wall coming down was the highlight, but it was all down hill from there. The writing was lazy and cliche. And they ended with a ridiculously naive comparison of the US Border Wall to the Berlin Wall. Deutschland 89 decides to kill off all of the morally dubious characters in the last few episodes of the series to give our heroes a happy ending. The soundtrack is also not as good as it was in the first season. There are some particularly tense scenes in the show still, but the character motivations that set up those scenes do not always make the most sense. Overall, I would say the final season is a mixed bag, and I think most fans of the show will be disappointed.
