Life is really tough for Julie and Billy, two 30-something aspiring comics living and working in New York City. While their friends and acquaintances move on to find success and love, they continue to struggle with careers and relationships, getting more bitter by the day. By day, Julie's a TV blogger, and Billy works as a waiter. By night, they perform at a local comedy club. It's a good thing they have each other, though, because their behavior tends to land them in incredibly awkward situations, and they're completely clueless as to why people dislike them or find them offensive. They don't hesitate, for example, to poll the other attendees at a funeral -- while the service is in progress -- to find a good place in the area for lunch. The 30-minute Hulu-original series is executive-produced by Amy Poehler ("Parks and Recreation") and Dave Becky ("Louie").

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Difficult People picks up even more momentum in its sophomore season, upping the addictive yet somehow relatable nastiness of its leads with fast-paced -- and possibly therapeutic -- hilarity.

I like Difficult People. Whenever I watch it, though, I'm always acutely aware of why I like it. Go to Full Review

It's all clever and funny, if you enjoy laughing at people who are thoroughly mean and selfish, which I do. They represent some of the darker sides of human nature, those petty, unpleasant feelings we're generally taught to hide. Go to Full Review

You have been warned. This is maddeningly raw, often broad comedy. Me, I liked its sheer, unadulterated rudeness. Watch this and you will feel better about yourself and the world. That is the point; that is the therapy it provides. Go to Full Review

There have been countless shows about the bond of friendship, but never one that so perfectly portrays the kind of connection you can have to the friend that loves the worst version of yourself. Go to Full Review

What distinguishes Difficult People is Klausner and Eichner's fluent, acerbic approach to the nebulous substratum of pop culture that Susan Sontag might, with a bit of prodding, call twenty-first century camp. Go to Full Review

Difficult People ups its guest star game with its sophomore premiere, packing in appearances by John Mulaney, Tina Fey, and Sandra Bernhard... [Fey's] is a c-plot story that seemingly goes nowhere, but if you're a fan of 30 Rock, it's gratifying as hell. Go to Full Review

10/13/2017 Patches is the best thing I have ever seen. 10 episodes is not nearly enough for these two funnies! See more 09/13/2016 A better sophomore season that not only kicks up the laughs, but the wretchedness of the characters as well. See more 09/02/2016 It's a mixed bag. Billy Eichner, Andrea Martin and James Urbaniak are hilarious, but Julie Klausner is practically unwatchable. I had to stop midway through this season because she just became unbearable. They really should dump her. See more 08/30/2016 S2 was a letdown from s1 but there are still really good moments here and there. See more 08/03/2016 The show of the summer...every episode is a hoot and a half. I hope this show goes on for many years. See more 08/02/2016 "I'm starting to think Kirk Cameron was right." "About what?" "About the fact that you're too gay...." Few shows get me on trailers alone but this one did and its pretty much delivered ever since.. See more Read all reviews
