A divorced psychologist tries to help his patients, some of them famous, cope with their life traumas while sharing his home with aimless adult son Ben, who only lives to make passes at Dr. Katz's sarcastic receptionist, Laura. The show was animated in a style, called Squigglevision, invented by the show's co-creator, Tom Snyder.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Distinct, amusing and surprisingly heartfelt, this shaky low-budget animated series seamlessly fuses stand-up routines with therapy sessions.

The retro-scripted, improvised dialogue (a style they pioneered, especially for animation) between Katz and Ben still totally kills Go to Full Review

Dr. Katz has proved capable of a brisk originality. Jonathan Katz avoids all trite psychiatric yuks, while the animation is perfectly suited to the show's verbal tone of muted hilarity. Go to Full Review

The concept behind Dr. Katz is a pretty lazy one... Upon closer inspection though, the character of Dr. Katz ends up being fleshed out pretty well as a stressed but well-intentioned guy who is legitimately trying to help his patients. Go to Full Review

08/16/2021 An absolutely stunning series with the best jokes from a good variety of comedians. This show really is the heaven for those who are into stand-up comedy! See more Jonathan K @NojEsco 02/02/2021 While not firing on all cylinders yet, Season 1 of Doctor Katz was an excellent start to a unique show: A modern day sitcom that actually RELAXES you while you watch it, rather than amp you up. My wife and I watch this show regularly before going to sleep as it's engaging yet helps put you into a mellow mindset. This is helped by the fact that the art, while hardly technically advanced, is enjoyable and used to great extent (sometimes adding great visuals to bolster an existing joke), and the music is low-key but groovy and enjoyable, with the main theme being a pleasure to listen to on its own. The voice acting is also pretty great, and the 'Comics Using their Neurotic Comedic Material in the Form of Therapy Sessions' gag is funny enough to carry the show for half its runtime (as that is how much time is dedicated toward it). Now, in Season 1, the makers were attempting to make these Comedy/Therapy sessions a balancing act between the two, and while it works, it was clear that this wasn't entirely sustainable, so the other Seasons concentrated on the Comedy aspect, giving Dr Katz himself a couple of good moments of observed commentary dotted throughout, and honestly I think that approach was better. What makes it all work, however, is how great of a character Jonathan Katz is, as well as his son Ben - they're both mild mannered but Ben is substantially.. I don't want to say dumber, as he showcases a decent degree of intellect, but at the same time he's prone to making obvious mistakes, and regularly displays an amazing inability to read people. These are also great when he interacts with his father's young assistant, Laura, his crush - She is largely quite unprofessional and sometimes even mildly manipulative, but she does just enough good for everyone to where you can look past past these faults, but Ben's overwhelming belief that he will woo her someday, while undergoing some of the most basic romantic mistakes, are the moments Laura as a character gets to shine. She's actually somewhat sharp-witted and more than anything, she just finds Ben annoying, but she also doesn't consider him a bad person, so wisely, they tend to have Laura not be too cruel toward him. This allows Doctor Katz to partake in some edgy moments of humor, to balance out a series' much more upbeat tone. All of these balances work, particularly the balance between Dr Katz's professional life and is home life, as both are very entertaining (and often times endearing), and because of this, the show works perfectly if you're in the mood for what it's offering.
