What to Know

Critics Consensus

Zoe Kazan imbues her legacy adaptation with delicious moral quandaries and sumptuous landscapes, but it's the expanded character work from Pugh and Lee that brings justice and dignity to this new canon of East of Eden.

The acting is fine. But unlike similar series embracing the classic cinematic melodrama vibe (such as Cape Fear), the heavy-handed biblical symbolism and the slow pacing can be something of a slog. Go to Full Review

It's lingered with me in the weeks since I first watched it, in a way that a lot of alleged prestige TV simply doesn't. And even some aspects that don't work throughout can land hard. Go to Full Review

East of Eden is one of the best series of the year. Pugh's portrayal of Cathy deserves the highest praise, and this reinterpretation of the anti-hero brings a new image of what makes a woman monstrous or feminine, and a better understanding of Cathy. Go to Full Review

The series doesn't shy away from graphic sex and violence, which some viewers may find shocking, but for this adaptation, it works to add grit and realism to a dark American story. Go to Full Review

Zoe Kazan’s take on John Steinbeck’s masterpiece is a resplendent, candlelit melodrama full of high-concept monologues and a collage-style presentation. Go to Full Review

Sinead K @RT31976091 3 hrs ago Didn't know what to expect as I have never read the book but what a story. The themes of choice and nature vs nurture are handled magnificently. Acting was incredible. Don't cry often but this one got me at the end. See more Craig B @CraigB7708 3 hrs ago Hard to believe the same author who wrote Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men wrote this ugly piece. Now I haven't read the book so I am assuming it follows somewhat closely the book, I hope that is right. Ugly and gross with extremely unlikeable characters, not say a villain you love to hate, but just gross people you would not want to follow in a story. Shocked this is considered a classic. See more Alyssa L @RT60612423 3 hrs ago Could not stop watching This See more Mit N @mitaly 4 hrs ago I just finished Netflix’s limited series East of Eden and found it very impressive. I definitely think it’s an awards contender. Florence Pugh was excellent as Cathy, as were Christopher Abbott as Adam and Hoon Lee as Lee. Almost the entire cast did beautifully, although the two boys and Abra didn’t quite stand out for me the way the others did. What I especially appreciated was the series’ exploration of why Cathy became so cruel. I’m always curious about what causes someone to do terrible things—what happened, what initiated that level of cruelty. The explanation that someone is simply inherently bad has never satisfied me. This series gave me the piece I needed to understand her. Spoilers for the ending: I loved how the beginning only hints at what happened to Cathy, and how she barely touches on it herself. Then, at the end, when the child version of herself appears and she embraces her, those earlier hints come together. I felt a sense of redemption and relief in that embrace. See more Chelsey M @RT61993959 12 hrs ago I went into East of Eden knowing absolutely nothing about the story or Steinbeck’s novel, and what a pleasant surprise! I stumbled upon it while recovering from surgery, and within the first half of the very first episode, I was completely hooked. It was exactly what I needed to keep me entertained while stuck on the sofa. I loved it so much that I finished it way too quickly, and now I’m struggling to find anything equally captivating. I almost wish I could watch it again for the first time! Absolutely loved it! See more Snjezana T @RT20213750 12 hrs ago Felt a bit Hallmarky at moments. Too biblical for my taste, but I get it, that was the original writers idea. The only good character was Cathy. Florence's performance was amazing, as usual, but the whole thing was slow, boring and cheezy. See more Read all reviews
