Ellen: Season 1 Photos
Tv Season Info
Ellen and her friends aren't exactly yuppies, aren't exactly thirtysomethings and apparently are too old for Generation X. They're not Generation X. They're Generation Zero. They're Generation Dumb.
Frenetic, whoopingly funny at times, just plain crass at others, pilot for "These Friends of Mine" tries for yuks from purposeless characters.
Part of the problem here is that the people who made These Friends, including creator-writers Carol Black and Neal Marlens, want you not merely to laugh at but to identify - nay, mind-meld - with these characters.
For what it's worth, DeGeneres is blithely likable in this role, and does a better job of being DeGeneres than Seinfeld does being Seinfeld, although Seinfeld is so awful that that's faint praise.
Carol Black and Neal Marlens left this new series almost immediately after creating it. This time, though, they didn't leave anything memorable behind.
These Friends of Mine could easily become friends of yours. All you have to do is forgive the new ABC sitcom for being a dead-on knockoff of Seinfeld.
There is really nothing to dislike about these friends. But there is nothing to rave about, either. The best I can say about this show is I suspect many people won't mind visiting them a second time.
Yes, DeGeneres herself is sweet and genial and impossible not to like, but these 11 episodes - dating from when the show was called These Friends of Mine... - are like Seinfeld lite... very, very lite.
Audience Reviews for Ellen: Season 1
Nov 29, 2020Not a 100-percent big fan of Ellen but I liked this TV show. When I say I liked it I liked season 1, season 1 was cool it was Fresh It was hip 3 other shows I liked got cancelled and this look promising, but nobody could compete with friends regardless of whether I didn't like it or not, it was considered to be like friends but it wasn't really but the actress of Janice was in this show the famous Janice from Friends. The actors where promised at least a two season deal but they were screwed and the only character to remain throughout the whole show was Ellen and it really did just become the Ellen show. As I said to season 1 was great and then season 2 onwards its just a show with no structure.
