Basil Fawlty is an inept and slightly out-of-his-head English hotel manager, who is tortured by "that annoying section of the general public who insist on staying at hotels." Fawlty is constantly berated by his wife, and his efforts are continually hampered by their Spanish waiter, Manuel.

It's to be hoped that Cleese doesn't become so engrossed in therapy and coming to terms with himself that he loses the insane streak in his writing. Totally well-adjusted characters on television are boring. Go to Full Review

There weren't any largely obvious differences between the first and second series, save for a tighter rein on some of the denser scripts. The farce got more darkly outrageous and personal, leaving no room for improvement in any of the six episodes. Go to Full Review

Dan B @RT88372383 06/14/2024 Crazy good! All involved are so generous with being exposed for the purpose of comedy. John Cleese was fantastic during this period. Even though I believe originally the show is a ripoff of another show it is still the king! Show later got an American franchised clone TV Show, but if I remember correctly they pulled off the atrocity of leaving the Basil character out of it. Yikes! Enjoy this timeless piece instead!!! See more Leaburn O @RT35452347 02/16/2024 (Both seasons). There are some excellent episodes in both series and some rather more tepid ones too. At its best, the humour remains on point. Where it’s not so good, the humour descends to Cleese shouting hysterically and seemingly endlessly in place of jokes. The misinterpreting words and saying he’s from Barcelona does get tiring at times. I can see how it would have been revered but comedy has come a long way since and there certainly is funnier stuff around today even if peak Fawlty Towers remains funny in its own right. See more Ben M @RT41595702 10/11/2023 Best comedy in the history of Television See more 06/25/2020 Keeps the pace set by the first series of episodes a few years earlier. Hilarious antics, memorable guest stars, and situations that have become legendary. Simply brilliant. See more samuel l @RT76616206 01/16/2020 My favourite comedy TV show. Classic British humour and even though video quality has significantly improved since its release, the quality of comedy is modern day shows is nowhere near as good. It's a shame there was never a season 3. Great characters, lots of laughs, and new entertaining plots. See more Petros T @PetrosTserpelis 08/03/2019 (both seasons) Some episodes are rather underwhelming in the laughter department but at its best "Fawlty Towers" serves as a high-octane situation comedy boosted by John Cleese's charisma.
