What to Know

Critics Consensus

Foundation's big-budget production and impressive performances are a sight to behold, but it struggles to wrangle the behemoth that is its source material into a fully satisfying series.

As with all good sci-fi, Foundation gives you plenty to chew on -- and the chewing has only just begun. Go to Full Review

It would be enjoyable if they had a bit more fun with it, but watching it felt like I was in a meeting. Go to Full Review

By keeping the audience at arm's length, Foundation also makes it that much harder to connect with any of the characters, despite some solid performances from the entire cast. Go to Full Review

This series is what all science fiction shows should use as their standard. The scope of the story telling, the production value, and character performances are all outstanding. Go to Full Review

Foundation season 1 is a highly compelling piece of sci-fi that has some magnificent visual effects. Lee Pace, and Jared Harris light up the show with their commanding character portrayals. Go to Full Review

Some of the worlds we visit are pulled right from the pages of Tekhnika Molodezhi... But this world building does produce long ponderous scenes, and pace can be an issue at times in the screenplay from show runners David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman. Go to Full Review

Lavish C @RT31524559 May 25 Worst adaptation of anything ever. It COMPLETELY betrays the CORE of Asimov's ideas and intentions . It turns everything into a pathetic personal melodrama full or emotional rhetoric in the worst woke/gen-z tradition, "polishing" it to align with the modern Disney woke bull-sci-fi. Asimov's work is intellectual and impersonal, all is about cycles and group dynamics, while this crap is hyper emotional and hyper individualistic. It's the same bs that Star Trek did with Discovery. Also the woke bs of all male white characters becoming female black ones, and THE core central character that unifies the Robot, Empire and Foundation series, Daneel the robot who was the true mind behind the creation of Psychohistory, of the Foundations, of the later Gaia etc, here it's a female, hyper emotional, with romantic/sexual bs going on, and while she manipulates the empire she has ZERO role in the rest. I can't express in words how DEEPLY I hate this work and its creators, without being banned :) See more Boo E. @Boo.Eastland Mar 30 The cinematography was amazing - the cgi is amazing. The writing, pacing, acting, dialogue, time jumping is not good. Character building is not good - I really do not care if any of these characters make it out of this show alive. There is a lack of action - way too much talking about things that are/have/will happen - a lack of showing what is happening. The first episode is completely impossible to follow if you ARE paying attention. Most of the reviews - are people just looking at the visuals now and then and being like ooh and ahh? Did they watch an entirely different show? Are they mistaking pretension for cerebral? Were they just looking up from their phones now and then? In short - no likeable characters except for one kid and one adult on the opening scenes, bad writing, poor acting, bad character development, bad pacing, over diaglogued with lack of action. I have never read the books - I'm not sure if you need a foundation in Foundation to watch this. See more Night T @RT78585711 Mar 16 There is a lot to like about the first season. The performances of Lee Pace (Day) and Laura Birn (Demerzel) are outstanding. The wardrobe and set design are excellent. Indeed, the best of the first season involves Empire and Demerzel. On the downside, the writing is hack quality at times. Lou Llobell (Gaal) isn't well cast as the main protagonist. I could look past the obligatory Girl-boss inserts if the writing were stronger. Sadly, these qualities seem to be negatively correlated these days, and the writers have gone all in with the Girl-bossization of Asimov's work. See more W.L. C @WayneCampbell Mar 3 What an incredibly boring series. It is honestly beyond me how anyone could stand more than 30 minutes of this dreck (I managed to stay awake for 28 minutes and 10 seconds). Flat characterizations, innumerable plot holes, and nonsensical narrative. Beam me down, Scotty, and give me something worthwhile. See more Elaine T @tempest_love Feb 20 Day, Dawn, and Dusk--their whole backstory was enough to keep me watching. Unfortunately I had to fast forward through Gaal's parts of the show...I can't stand the whinning and crying. I dreaded her screen time--She made it a painful watch. Jared Harris and Lee Pace are always compelling to watch in no matter what character they play. The surprise actress for me was Leah Harvey playing Salvor, I just loved her character so much--adorable. I've never seen her in anything before but she quickly became my favorite, along with Demerzel--beautiful and amazing. Season 1 is worth a watch. See more Chris M. @CriMcD Feb 8 Brother Dawn, Day & Dusk carry this show on their backs. Each character is outstanding but Brother Day stands out as the most Phenomenal Performance in the show. I sometimes dread watching the other arcs in the 1st season but hope that they improve in Season 2. I also hope Hari has more screen time in the coming seasons because he was under utilized in Season 1. Gaal is useless in this show & her character alone is why I am only giving 4 stars.
