Critics Consensus

Foundation's big-budget production and impressive performances are a sight to behold, but it struggles to wrangle the behemoth that is its source material into a fully satisfying series.

Very aesthetically pleasing. But you have to put it on mute, and pretend that it's not based on Asimov's Foundation. I would be OK with a deviation from the source material, but they handled the source material with little respect. The laundry list of terrible decisions they made is just much too long: their misunderstanding or disregard of what psychohistory is vis a vis the role of the individual, making certain characters nonsensically religious, way too much drama, way too much star-wars-ification of the source material... The foundation team would do well to look at how the new Dune movie was respectful of its source material, and was better for it.

    They raped the original story

I often find myself in disagreement with media critics, but I found Gizmodo's review of Apple TV+'s production of Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" with its apt title says it all: "They Said Foundation Couldn't Be Filmed, and It Still Hasn't Been." I will likely continue to watch the episodes, because there is some stellar acting and some nice contemporary topical relevance woven in, but I watch it with the certain knowledge that this is NOT the good Doctor's "Foundation." We'll see if it stands on its own as tv worth watching. But the thing that got me to watch it in the first place, that it was, if not faithful to the original, arguably a reimagining and reenvisioning of the original, that is simply not the case. There is only the barest of bones of the original premise (and style.) Not enough to satisfy one who grew up with the books and cherishes them so much he still has his original copies of the 60's era paperback editions of the trilogy in his library. Neverthjeless, this is TV worth watching.

An indecipherable mix of Asimov and Dawson's Creek (not by any means a compliment)... I hope everyone involved hangs themselves.

By far the best show on TV at present. So many of the negative reviews are from people who read the book and therefore feel that the movie is a let-down, but for anyone who has not read the book this series is fantastic.

Not a horrible show, but the only connection with the Asimov books is the name Foundation and the name Hari Seldon. Without going into spoilers, the change in the concept of psychohistory in the 6th episode was a great disappointment to me. But that was added to o many changes to the books this series would have done better calling itself something else, like the "A Story from the Foundation Metaverse".

Extraordinary universe created in this series. I can't wait to see every episode...

Just more woke garbage from people who can't write their own stories. It's fine to gender swap the characters, in fact if they kept to the original story line the female hero's would have worked even better. Not sticking to the plot on the first crisis is stupid, especially when you replaced Asimov's genius story with the campy shooter plot. I can't continue watching, Apple i'm not renewing after my 3 mo. trial.

You have to have patience with this one. It would be better on Netflix where you could watch it all at once. Or wait until the entire first season is complete then watch it. You also have to pay attention to the details. As I learn more and go back to rewatch, it all makes much more sense and you can see the little bread crumbs that are being left behind. Patience is a must because they float back and forth through the timeline & they will show something awesome and not return to that point for two hours of showtime. Overall I love the show but i think it would've been better received if all episodes were released at once.

Awful it is dull and low budget. This could have been so much more the casting and cinematography is appalling. We were promised an adaptation of a piece of classic fiction and what we got was still acting and cheap camera to facial reaction shots. The director should be ashamed of himself for turning a literary classic into utter…… and the cinematography is terrible. This should have been the sci-fi for our time but in the end is just as bad as the Dune tv mini series so poor and so far (episode 6) so cheap. You have ruined a classic shame on you
