Gideon's Crossing: Season 1 (2000 - 2001)

Season 1
Gideon's Crossing

Critics Consensus

Despite Andre Braughter's killer performance as the titular doctor, Gideon's Crossing is riddled with lackluster supporting roles and weak storylines that keep it from ever waking up from its coma.

Critic Reviews for Gideon's Crossing Season 1

All Critics (12) | Top Critics (8)

In his first post-"Homicide" role, Andre Braugher was just as intense as a Boston doctor as he had been as Det. Frank Pembleton. But this medical drama flatlined.

Top Critic

The rapid dialogue, editing and extreme close-ups of the superb actors give these and other sequences a tone of urgency that extends even through the inevitable subplots.

Sep 19, 2019 | Full Review…

Gideon works in a Boston teaching hospital where he lectures young doctors, who are weakly written and played. They are ensnared in unbelievable storylines, such as treating a dog and a young man with a mystery illness. Both plots end ridiculously.

Sep 19, 2019 | Full Review…

It is clear that ''Gideon's Crossing'' is not just another hospital series. With a deep and perplexing hero, a wide social reach and uncommon eloquence, it instantly takes a place among the best dramas on television.

Sep 19, 2019 | Full Review…

It's a cerebral approach to issues of healing and loss, made all the more dramatic by the presence of Andre Braugher.

Check out Gideon, but I'll do that only when Attanasio and his staff bring the saintly Gideon back to earth and give the strong supporting cast more screen time.

Sep 19, 2019 | Rating: B- | Full Review…

But far too much of the show - a story about a wealthy hospital patron and her dog, for example - struggles far too obviously to convey a quality of eccentricity that in the end comes across simply as lame.

Sep 19, 2019 | Full Review…

That dominant part of writer Paul Attanasio's ("Homicide," "Quiz Show") script is gripping, from start to gloriously subtle finish. A little less strong, but still well done, are the requisite kooky-patient and young-doctor side stories.

Sep 19, 2019 | Full Review…

The residents and interns who are Gideon's acolytes barely interact with him and seem to be stuck in a different, more frivolous series-perhaps Trapper John, M.D. We recommend immediate surgery.

Sep 19, 2019 | Full Review…

The show fails to deliver more than the fine performances of Braugher and McGill in this first hour.

Sep 19, 2019 | Full Review…

If you are a fan of Braugher's work in "Homicide" and you crave quality drama, this is a pilot you do not want to miss.

Sep 19, 2019 | Full Review…

This new medical drama is so earnest, so sincere, so dramatic you might almost feel like you're in a real doctor's office facing a life-and-death situation.
