Critic Reviews for Hell on Wheels Season 5

All Critics (7) | Top Critics (1)

Hell on Wheels Season 5 was a strong last outing, from its new direction and characters to the conclusion of Cullen and the Swede's battle to making us continue to care about Cullen through all his ups and downs.

Durant further embodies a harbinger that darkly foreshadows the shape of the American political landscape and a post-truth Presidency.

Anson Mount as Cullen Bohannon, the onetime Rebel officer employed by the railroads, is the epitome of a Western star. He supplies his character the expected stoicism but also a range of emotions and conflicts.

Luckily, there's a few new faces to help play out the morality saga that is Cullen Bohannon's every waking moment of life.

Hell on Wheels has made its final stop, but a freeze-frame of where it pulled in would shine bittersweet light on a country moving full-speed ahead like a train in vain.

Audience Reviews for Hell on Wheels: Season 5

Hell on Wheels really brought it for its final season. While I particularly enjoyed the final "battle" between Cullen and the Swede, the final few episodes also established a satisfying closure for Bohannon as well as Durant and the railroad itself.

this show and season 5 are amazing. in the show it displays the west and the railroad. in the show you see how some of the people lived and met ens meat and how people were treated. in the beginning seasons it shoes how black were "free" but not really free. all the things like disease also people trying to kill poeple. the show has some very well shots of the land and it makes it seem kind of crazy on how it has changed. Indians are kind of played to be the bad guys in the show but that not even how it really was.

Best show I have ever seen. Please continue with a season 6 or a spin off! I want more!! Please get rid of the Walking Dead!

I don't think the show even looks like what it used to be. A episode or two is still good. Otherwise the only reason to watch is the series is almost over and I want to complete the show.

Would have gotten 5 but the end of the show was extremely anti-climactic and SO predictable! ??

Every season was a solid 5-star until season 5. Not sure what happened...Still fun and entertaining but it seems to have lost it's way a bit as it wraps up.

Great series threw and threw! Great plot they in my opinion couldn't have chose a better cast and crew for this show. I couldn't be more pleased with the way things turned out on Hell on Wheels. This is one of those shows( like the Wire) that I will watch atleast once every two years

This is a great story representing how dirty, difficult and amazing connecting the country was for everyone. And Cullen Bohannan is one of the best conflicted hero protagonists I've ever seen.

It appears i'm in for the long run with this one, despite the Swede/Bohannon tango being only just understandable and starting to get a but dull. Saying goodbye to some really good characters over the preceding 4 seasons, by 5 I feel there's not loads to hang on to as I hit the annoyingly Swede-heavy post season break episodes. I have to say I never really got over the switch from the more compelling Siobhan Williams to Mackenzie Porter, actor switches are always a tough sell, sadly Siobhan was a well established face. Aside from that it's been a pretty awesome show so far, 19th Century America, such an interesting time to explore dramatically. Wonder if I'll make it to season 6?

Took an interesting story and destroyed it. Seasons 1-4 all had their quirks, which made them unique. Season 5 is like some modern artist with a bent toward the masses took over production. In other words, s**t. I've watched the first five episodes and I can see any reason to waist my time watching any more. Seasons 1-4 were great, season 5 is a waste.
