What to Know

Critics Consensus

Helstrom's strong visual effects can't save it from the fact that its characters simply aren't interesting enough to overcome their familiar setting.

In the first five episodes made available to press, a general lack of focus prevails, as those plot threads and others keep piling up and unspooling without intersecting. Go to Full Review

It's moody and ominous but superficially. There are glimpses of something more compelling buried in the usual, but the show hasn't found its footing or identity yet. Go to Full Review
Daniel Fienberg The Hollywood Reporter 10/16/2020
Given that Helstrom is already the last piece of a TV administration Marvel has moved away from, nothing here is good enough to make an investment in. Check out CBS' actually clever, actually scary Evil instead. Go to Full Review

There isn't anything inherently objectionable about it. It simply comes off feeling a lot blander than something like this should. Go to Full Review

In the end, there's nothing that's wrong with Helstrom that couldn't have been fixed with a little more attention and care... Helstrom has its charms, but all these small problems combine to make it a frustrating watch. Go to Full Review

George H @RT68996919 Jul 30 This was a great show and even though it’s been years since they pulled the plug it’s still a shame that they hold on to it. (ENGLISH) The worst thing about Helstrom isn’t that it’s poorly made — it’s that it feels utterly empty. It doesn’t scare, doesn’t intrigue, and never makes you care about its characters. The premise sounded promising: the children of a serial killer, tied to demonic forces and haunted pasts. But it all fades into lifeless dialogue, characters with zero charisma, and a pace that never truly takes off. It’s not just a writing issue — the casting is also a problem. None of the actors seem convinced by their roles, and that lack of conviction drags the whole show down. Relationships don’t click, emotions don’t land, and even the possessions feel routine. Visually, though, there are some strong moments. The effects are far better than in some so-called “cult” shows. It’s frustrating, because the idea had real potential to blend horror with psychological depth. But it doesn’t go deep, and it doesn’t scare. It ends up stuck in the middle — and honestly, it’s hard to keep watching. A failed attempt, albeit nicely wrapped. See more Michael T @Tur7on 10/07/2024 This is my favourite marvel series upto date, I can't believe I avoided it for so long mainly because it's not included in the MCU, but with the MCU giving more and more adult based material the green light now, and especially with the midnight suns, this would of been an excellent first look into the MCU paranormal genre. See more Hill R @RT84222345 08/16/2024 A solid Marvel series that holds your attention and even scares you a little in places. Would love to see a season 2. See more Read all reviews
