Deyond the dramatic but hardscrabble setting, "Hinterland" is just like a lot of other British cop shows, except slower and a little more formulaic. Go to Full Review

The films do vary in quality - one and four are probably the best - but visually, Hinterland is spectacular, and [Richard] Harrington's performance is strong. Go to Full Review

Hinterland doesn't feel over-researched on the police-procedural front either - making a virtue out of a necessity... the Welsh language doesn't lend itself to police jargon. Go to Full Review

This isn't West Wales as seen in the brochure. The place is drenched not only in rain but also blood, while the landscapes are grimly wintry, as are the faces of everyone involved in this deliciously dark show. Go to Full Review

Satisfying Gothic touches hauled it a thousand miles away from the standard crime dramas and I started to enjoy the story. Go to Full Review

05/29/2022 I have watched all three series, and have enjoyed them all, the acting is good Wales looks stunning. Will now be heading to Aberystwyth what a lovely setting. See more andrei d @RT74856639 01/28/2021 Probabil chiar mai bun in welsh See more 01/01/2021 The stories in this series are complex enough, the locations and settings beautiful and the acting is good. The lead character (Tom Mathais) is a complex one and therefore might not be everyone's cup of tea, but Richard Harrington plays him well enough. The stories are dark and deal with some difficult issues. Yet the scenes aren't grossly explicit making for good viewing. The rest of the cast, especially Mali Harris (DI Rhys), has portrayed her character well where she brings out the challenges of dealing with the difficult Mathias and staying professional in her job without going over the top. Easily watchable. See more 12/17/2020 OMG this is laughably bad. Richard Harrington is like the Robert Mitchum of Welsh actors. He has only one facial expression. Literally throughout the entire series. In every single f**king scene he's in, you can count on him to stare meaningfully. At other people. At scenery. At inanimate objects. While his expression never changes. His female sidekick has caught this bad habit too. They walk up to a crime scene, side by side, and all of a sudden stop like a couple of dolts, stand there and stare meaningfully at whatever they were walking toward. Then they resume walking. The lead has almost no dialogue. Someone asks him a question, he either stares meaningfully at the person and doesn't answer, or he stares meaningfully at the person and then utters a single word. I wish they'd put as much effort into the plot, the script and character development as they did into whatever it is they thought was important. At its root, this is a formulaic, derivative police procedural. Remote countryside? Check. Male and female detective partners who have conflict? check. Brooding male detective who has a dark secret? check. Maverick who falls afoul of his superiors? check. And finally? The Welsh Tourist Board, if there is one, should bloody SUE the producers of this series, because they manage to make Wales look incredibly unappealing - dry, treeless for the most part, cold, cloudy or rainy, and populated with monosyllabic depressed people all of whom apparently have dark secrets. I am sometimes "meh" about series but this one actually ANNOYS me. See more Stephen G @RT76499974 11/11/2020 A morose show with morose leads interviewing morose witnesses and suspects about the deaths of morose victims in a morose setting. All of which we see in 90 standalone 90 minute episodes that could be cut to 45 minutes and would still be overly long. It's hard to tell where the poor acting, writing and directing each begin and end. But the upshot is a show that leaves the viewer remarkably uninterested in the lead characters or any others they encounter. I wonder whether somehow this show, set in rural Wales, was inspired by the far superior Shetland, which premiered a year earlier. If so, the creators decided to take the strengths of Shetland - engaging lead characters and gorgeous Scottish seaside scenery - and do the opposite in Wales, transforming a beautiful landscape into something withered and lifeless. Regardless, it's a real disappointment. We tried giving it a chance through three episodes, and found each one worse than the previous installment. See more 08/30/2020 Fantastic show and the first season is amazing. Sets out the style of the show and introduces the characters brilliantly. The Welsh setting is beautiful and it is film really well. Acting isfirst class and the stories told are chilling and gripping. See more Read all reviews
