What to Know

Critics Consensus

Nick Kroll takes up the torch from Mel Brooks and does him proud with an all-star sketch series that's just as uproariously funny -- and as hit-and-miss -- as the original motion picture.

It's consistent with the approach and the outrageous humor of Mel Brooks over more than 70 years of provoking big bursts of laughter. "History Of The World: Part II" is barely historical, but it's fairly hysterical. Go to Full Review

Why, it’s a wacky melding of the old and the new. Go to Full Review

Four hours of sketch comedy means that there’s going to be plenty of misses alongside the hits... Thankfully, there is usually some lovely loopiness -- a key Brooks trait -- bubbling away. Go to Full Review

Those familiar with Mel Brooks’ work will be delighted that the entire series evokes his sense of humour. Unfortunately, that also means it’s very hit-and-miss. Go to Full Review

Just like Brooks’ filmography, the show is uneven, but on the occasions when it’s firing, it’ll make you laugh and laugh. Go to Full Review

There is a lot of nonsense in History of the World, Part II, but perhaps its most potent insight is admitting just how much our ideas about history are formed through pop culture. Go to Full Review

Sarah H. @DalekSarah 4d This was not as bad as I was thinking it was going to be. However, it still didn't live up to the risk-taking and edge of Brooks' earlier films. Personally I feel it should have been called History of the World Part III. See more Bret J Jun 20 As a huge Mel Brooks fan, I must express my complete and utter disappointment with this show. I was so excited when I heard it was coming out, but I only laughed once or twice throughout the entire season. It also has a great cast, but even that doesn't help it. See more Aleen H Jun 12 As someone who grew up and admire Mel Brooks, this was such a disappointment. It did not contain the humor of Mel Brooks. This felt like this was more about Nick Kroll’s humor. Very dry and very flat. You could tell the Mel Brooks didn’t have too much involvement in this series. This is more like The Nick Kroll show than that of History of the World. See more Hudson Ryan J Feb 9 I would say 90% of this was not funny and/or fell very flat. It reeks of the type of modern humor that does not come from a place of humor but a place of anger, hate, and prejudice. It felt contrived and forced. I have seen countless hours of comedy from the past and the present. And this was a classic reminder of why the modern entertainment industry is failing. It was painful to watch. There were one or two moments that were genuinely funny and those were not even supposed to be the main gag parts. Maybe those were accidental funnies. See more Tanaputz J @Tanaputz Feb 6 It's sad that Mel Brooks took Hulu up on the offer to use his name to sell such trash. And with shitty content like this, it's no wonder Disney+ has lost 700,000 subs. It'll be 700,001 as soon as I get done writing this and go cancel my account. See more Chris F 01/17/2025 Current Pocornometer definitely undersells this. The sketches are silly, for sure, but that is the point. This Mel Brooks style send up of history is clever and sometimes hilarious. Worth the watch if you're into this sort of thing. See more Read all reviews
