Critics Consensus

As stylish, well-acted, and compelling as it can be, Homecoming's second season simply can't find its way out of the shadow of the first.

Critic Reviews for Homecoming Season 2

All Critics (27) | Top Critics (10)

When people remember this show years down the road, they may even forget season two exists.

Faced with the challenge of justifying a return without Roberts, the filmmakers have mostly risen to the challenge. It's like one of those movie sequels nobody really asked for, but which proves to be a pleasant surprise.

Monáe, in common with first-season star Stephan James, has a face that can flicker between strength and vulnerability in an instant.

Homecoming takes dreamy confusion and injects it with vogue-ish paranoia. It is a twilight mirror, a black zone, deploying a Cold War mindset in a corporate now.

Rather than advance the story significantly (or startlingly), it functions more as an afterthought or a predictable epilogue.

May 21, 2020 | Full Review…

Homecoming Season 2 is a dive off into the unknown of reminiscent of some Hitchcockian works. The mystery isn't too tough to solve, but the revelations along the way are riveting.

May 23, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Janelle Monae, Chris Cooper, Stephan James, Hong Chau and Joan Cusack act their buns off in this S2 of Homecoming. As a fan os S1 - it's definitely worth the watch and the ride

May 22, 2020 | Full Review…

Shorter, sillier, and less interesting, it's just not quite clear what Amazon is trying to achieve with Homecoming season two.

May 22, 2020 | Rating: C+ | Full Review…

It's a clever expansion that pulls faithfully from its foundation, weaving old plot points into the series' stunning aesthetic for an apt follow-up worth a weekend binge watch.

May 22, 2020 | Full Review…

Spends most of its precious time jumping back and forth over plot threads of season one to needlessly tie them up.

May 22, 2020 | Full Review…

The story is evidently less complex, more linear and tenuous. [Full Review in Spanish]

May 22, 2020 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

Fails to be as compelling as season one's plot. And the style of season two, directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez, lacks the Hitchcockian panache executive producer/director Sam Esmail established in season one.

muy mala segunda temporada, tendrian q haber terminado en la primera si no podian mantener el nivel actoral y de historia, me hace acordar a true detective, salvando la distancia.

was the last episode written by David and Weiss?

Ok I didn't like season one but I was optimistic that this season could redeem itself. Yeah, not a chance in hell, season two makes season one look amazing. There is so much that is wrong with this series but let's start with it being painfully boring and the story makes absolutely no damn sense. At least with season one it was interesting at times and had potential, season two is just a train wreck from the very start. Please, end this series unless you can scrap all the crap and come back with a much better product.

OMG this started as good idea and then some social justice insecure idiot got ahold of it. So what is this season about: All women are great, and all men are bad or stupid and in every way. Oh and lesbian couple, so a man isn't needed, oh and planning to have a baby - no man needed either. (even the male waiter serving the champagne is annoying and doing it wrong - I'm not kidding). The only male that is ok, is the lead guy from last season who is trying to get his memory back.

So painfully boring and slow.. hugely disappointed since I loved Season 1 so much.

Chris Cooper saved Season 2. Hong Chau was amazing and had an outstanding performance. Janelle Monae did well but her performance was not what I was expecting. Also, the part in the bar, the first indication she was not a soldier was when she avoided the question about the MOS and also 13F E4 is not an MOS; actually two separate things. Not to mention no one actually says the letter, it would be pronounced foxtrot. Other than my nitpicking, the story was way too short and did not feel all engaging. Chris Cooper and Hong Chau kept the story interesting. I would assume from the ending, no Season 3 on the horizon. Bummer.

I can't believe I wasted so much time thinking this would get better! I watched through episode 5....the story and action was minimal. I was appalled at the waste of such great talent. It doesn't confront anything like the first season did.

The first season was a thriller. Something that you'd want to binge on. Season 2, all I ask is why? Who's idea was it that the f-bomb should be in every conversation, sometimes every sentence. People don't talk like that. That's just bad writing. The character relationships, what a cliche. Hollywood, I know you need those checkboxes checked, but when is it enough? How about using your imagination? Season two is dull, lacks imagination, is poorly acted, not very well cast, but mostly, it's dumb. Season two does not portray real people. Not worth your valuable time.

I honestly loved season 2 from the opening scene to the final credits (which is incredibly rare for me). It was a total departure from season 1, but only in the best of ways. Like season 1, information and character developments are continually unraveled and exposed throughout the entire season, but this time the process kept me gripped through even the (very) few slower moments. This season just flew by (sadly), and, honestly, I thought the ending was phenomenal. Because of the way the season plays out, I imagine it's not great on replay value, but I was completely enthralled the first time through.

Season 2 was great and set up a reunion with Julie for Season #3 perfectly... I hope #3 is already in development.
