Houdini & Doyle: Season 1 (2016)

Season 1
Houdini & Doyle

Critics Consensus

Weston and Mangan are fun as Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle, but their capers aren't much more than passable.

Critic Reviews for Houdini & Doyle Season 1

All Critics (28) | Top Critics (14)

Where Houdini & Doyle's magic ends is with the actual murders themselves. These men working together as "detectives" is an implausible plot to begin with, especially on a week-to-week basis.

Escape this.

It's not necessarily bad, understand, just surprisingly underwhelming considering it's called Houdini & Doyle. One expects fireworks; instead we get consternation.

We already have impressions of these people, and the FOX version of them often feels flat and disappointing compared to their legends.

May 3, 2016 | Full Review…

Everything seems off about Houdini & Doyle, including the casting and pairing of Michael Weston as Houdini and Stephen Mangan as Doyle.

May 3, 2016 | Full Review…

Houdini & Doyle likely won't set anyone's heart aflutter or the ratings on fire. But it looks like a passable spring/summer diversion and also just a bit of a history lesson on what these two guys were all about.

The tone throughout is lively, with Houdini and Doyle regularly engaged in verbal sparring or creative clue-sifting, and with Stratton, the trio finds a pleasing dynamic.

May 3, 2016 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

Houdini & Doyle is sharply written and expertly presented by this talented cast, and the men's repartee is delightful to behold.

May 3, 2016 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

I doubt even an entertainment-starved ghost would want more than one episode of Houdini & Doyle.

May 3, 2016 | Full Review…

For a show featuring Houdini as a lead character, there's surprisingly little magic in Houdini & Doyle. It plays out like just another procedural crime show of the type we've seen umpteen times before.

Jun 3, 2016 | Full Review…

Houdini & Doyle is not groundbreaking, but that's okay. It's entertaining enough for viewers to keep tuning in. [Full Review in Spanish]

Jul 11, 2018 | Full Review…

Houdini & Doyle has some honing to do, but it's sharpest when it honors its heroes: thrilling and chilling, with a dazzling sleight of hand.

It was a fun show to watch. Too bad it cancelled.

I see most of the critics weighed in after one showing. The show has gotten better by leaps and bounds after the first 2 showings. I recommend it highly.
  • Jun 27, 2016
Love love love. I really hope there will be a season two :)
  • Jun 13, 2016
Interesting period piece but I would wish for more intriguing stories. If this lasts another season, I'm going to hope there's a bit more mystery to the episodes and not as predictable as they've been.
  • Jun 06, 2016
Rebecca Liddiard as Constable Adelaide S...a perfect composite of emma watson and keira knightly.
  • May 30, 2016
Awesome show, hoping for Series 2/Season 2. worth watching. fun and well conceived. The actors are very comfortable in their roles. It's fiction, so, just remember that. Don't try to be a history buff, it's a what-if show, if Houdini and Doyle met, well, historically, they have, but in this show they meet in the prime of their lives and careers. Again, I repeat, this is very well worth seeing. I hope it gets renewed, fun and entertaining.

An interesting premise aided by three immensely likable actors - especially Liddiard as the first female constable at Scotland Yard - I don't see this show getting picked up for another season unless the cases they solve get much more interesting. But I'm willing to stick around to see if the script writers hit their stride.

Such a great high concept show that I miss getting greenlit like in the 90's. But just like the 90's I fear FOX will cancel it before it gains a good foothold. Haven't seen a great campy period piece like this since Brisco County, Jr! I particularly enjoy the motives for the main characters to enter into the procedural crime drama: To prove one way or another there is life after death. Each of the titular characters has great reasons for this motivation, plus their constable accomplice strike a nice balance against their macho bravado.

It's sort of getting better. Nothing to get over exited about. But then there is nothing much else on the TV either. At least it has a new concept and story
