I Am Not Okay With This: Season 1 (2020)

Season 1
I Am Not Okay With This

Critics Consensus

As awkward and charming as adolescence, but with twice the supernatural twists, I Am Not Okay With This' first season at times veers into shallow territory, but Sophia Lillis' strong performance keeps it afloat.

Great show! Covered a lot of heavy topics, but sadly the ending leaves more to be desired since the show was cancelled, but it is still an amazing watch. Highly recommend.

A fucking shame netflix decided to cancel this despite it's apparent plan for another season. Instead we're getting a Kissing Booth sequel and threequel...

One of the very few good Netflix originals which unfortunately and tragically got cancelled after its first season. This should have NOT been cancelled. Emily in Paris, Sex/Life etc - are you kidding me??

Awkward, funny, some drama and kind of a dark show. I really enjoyed watching. Got nothing much to say because of the fact how random this show is.

The people who criticize this show have extremely bad critiques of it. People cite this show as being derivative very frequently, which is fair enough if you don't like derivative media I can't fault you for it. However, these same reviewers will then cite Stranger Things as a better show, which has not a single original idea in its entire runtime. I love Stranger Things, but if you don't like shows heavily derivative of other media, it's not the show for you. IANOWT intentionally references Carrie in its finale, how could it not with the comic's plot point of a bloody homecoming, but other reviewers complaining that the show is "too 80s" just seems weird and wrong to me. Stan is often cited as an "80s" character, as if kids in the 80s thought vinyl was cool and wore sharp sky blue blazers. Is the show perfect? Of course not. Jenny in particular feels like a rushed inclusion who I think could've been set up better. However, the show as a whole juggles a lot of themes that yes, have been explored in other coming of age media, but does so in a way that is fresh and fun. In particular the plot around Syd's sexuality and her crush on her best friend Dina are handled extremely well. The show manages an accurate portrayal of the experiences many queer teenagers go through when they discover themselves, while at the same time managing to tell a story that isn't a coming out story. Syd's sexuality is never the focus of the narrative. Her relationship with Dina is, but apart from Brad's monologue at the end of the show the fact that the relationship is queer isn't even particularly relevant. This approach is in my view the best way to handle queer representation in media. Tell stories about queer people you would tell about straight people. A story about learning to control your emotions with a romantic subplot featuring the character's best friend who is in a different relationship for most of the show but ends up with the main character? That describes this show's plot and none of it necessarily needs to be queer, yet it is. Phenomenal work. Syd and Stan are the easy standouts here. Sophia and Wyatt have such incredible natural chemistry. They're so adorably awkward, and you can tell they really care about each other, even when Syd's anger drive a wedge between them. Dina is also a great character, if a little underused. I get that it's not her story but it would've been nice to see a bit more of her. Syd's family is also great, the two scenes in episode 6 and 7 between Syd and her mom are just absolutely beautiful. Overall, don't believe the half-assed critical reviews. I Am Not Okay With This is a very well-written show with a standout cast and interesting plot. If you don't like slow paced stories or shows without a massive "threat," this might not be the show for you. But if you're looking for a fun and introspective character study that tackles mental health, sexuality, trauma, and dealing with your issues in a healthy way, I think you'll love I Am Not Okay With This.

I'm definitely okay with I'm Not Okay with This, I love how they combine superpower and maturity together to bring us this beautiful, weird story. The only problem is it looks so familiar.

IMDB lists it as a comedy, but I'd say it is more a drama with some comic overtones. I found it entertaining. It was another of those <30 min / episode shows with 7 episodes. I enjoyed it and will watch the next season when it is available.

Excellent. Great performances from the leads coupled with a fantastic sound track and flawless special effects. Netflix inexplicably cancelled it despite it bot being a long season or run time. You can binge watch it as a normal length movie so that it not only doesn't out stay it's welcome instead it leaves you wanting more. Fantastic lgbt+ superhero content with a stranger things connection and feel. Also it's hilariously funny. Adult content but 100% recommend to all those who can remember how scary growing up can be.

A fine show to keep you hooked until the very end. It is a decent rehash of Carrie, which is one of the greatest horror movies of all time.
