Indian Summers: Season 1 Reviews

May 25, 2017
Indian Summers is better than that, never judging, never eulogising, even as it makes clear how wrong and morally vacant the whole enterprise called the white man's burden was.
March 14, 2016
For all those sumptuous settings and despite the impeccable performances, there remains something slightly hollow at its heart.

After watching the first somewhat slow episode, you may be tempted to give up on [the series]. But, don't. It has more than enough style, suspense and thrills to keep one glued past the first episode.
October 7, 2015
A glimpse of the last gasp of the British Raj in India with its nationalistic pride and it toxic racism.

Indian Summers looks fantastic. It's not involving enough in its first two episodes but begins to coalesce more in a third installment.
September 28, 2015
Pleasingly, Indian Summers never feels overstuffed, just exceedingly generous in the way it approaches the disparate people and situations portrayed.
September 28, 2015
Despite its innocuous title, Indian Summers develops some real heat as a political thriller.

There is a lot to love about Masterpiece: Indian Summers on PBS.

Maybe you'll care enough to stick around for 10 episodes to sort this out. I'm not sure I do.

At some point in episode three or four, when the characters and their story lines finally cohere... Indian Summers becomes a formidable and thoroughly addictive narrative.

Downton Abbey meets The Jewel in the Crown in another lush and lovely artisanal soap from PBS' Masterpiece, this one with top notes of jasmine and waning British colonialism.

Mr. Rutman's people are more off-the-shelf, but he keeps them moving and orchestrates their predictable perils and heartbreaks with some panache.
September 25, 2015
Rutman's writing, his exquisite sense of character, the subtle shadings behind even the most sexual or violent events combine for much of the way to make Indian Summers so exceptional.

It is, if anything, more incisive about class, both among the British and the Indians, than "Downton," while providing all the romance and intrigue anyone could wish for.
September 24, 2015
In true soap-opera style, everything that can go wrong does, and everyone is being blackmailed or conniving or lusting or about to be betrayed. And many pages of dialogue could have been cut with no harm done.
September 24, 2015
The production not only has the makings of a lengthy and addictive run, but proves something of a metaphor for the protracted, sorry tale of British adventures in India.

Several years will pass between Seasons 1 and 2 (now filming), but the gap may seem even longer for those who succumb to Indian Summers' exotic, enthralling spell.
September 21, 2015
This drama is a soaper that turns deftly into a political thriller.
