Jesse

Critics Consensus

Christina Applegate acquits herself nicely as a leading lady, but Jesse the character and series is too uninspired to honor her comedic charisma.

[Christina Applegate] can deliver a zinger deftly, but she also can be touching and winsome. The problem is Applegate lacks compelling material as Jesse Warner

Except for Bruno Campos' just-dandy Diego, Jesse is the worst-cast high-visibility show this season.

It's about as funny as "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" or any of those other social-realist films that came out of England in the '60s.

The show has no real vigor, lacking the spark that would compel the audience to return week after week.

Jesse is a good but not great comedy that's at least a slight departure from the numbing "chick-coms" churned out by NBC.

The family is deliberately wacky. The bachelor next door isn't. In case you don't notice the resemblance of Diego (Bruno Campos) to Antonio Banderas, the script points it out. He also has great comic timing.

Applegate is surprisingly charming, but her show, despite being from the "Friends" team, is a scoop of vanilla, "must-see" only if you are related to a cast member.

Jul 2, 2019 | Full Review…

This is a borderline recommendation, but Christina Applegate is so much better as a working-class single mom starring in this sitcom than she was as bimbette Kelly Bundy that you can't help but pull for her to make it.

Jesse desperately needs to relax; otherwise, she's normal -- so normal that the supporting cast must bear much of the comedy load. And therein lies a problem.

Jul 1, 2019 | Full Review…

The potential key to success for Jesse lies in the title character's budding romance with new neighbor, Diego... Bruno Campos, who plays Diego, looks like he's on a fast track to heartthrob status.

Jul 2, 2019 | Full Review…

Jesse is likable without being really engaging. And it has the rhythm and look of a lot of other sitcoms on the air.

Jul 2, 2019 | Full Review…

The charming comedy, taking up residence on NBC's closely watched Thursday-night lineup, stars "Married... With Children" veteran Christina Applegate as a single mom.
