Kenan: Season 1 (2021)

Season 1
Kenan

Critics Consensus

Kenan benefits from the warmth of its endearing ensemble - led by a reliably solid Kenan Thompson - but its stale sitcom trappings leave something to be desired.

Critic Reviews for Kenan Season 1

All Critics (12) | Top Critics (5)

The most promising aspects of the proceedings, namely the star's warm presence and the endearing rapport of this sitcom family, fall flat.

Feb 15, 2021 | Full Review…

The humor comes across as gentle and sweet, not quite lame but distinctly lacking in zing. A laugh track would only call attention to the writing's edge deficit. A lack of one buys the story some grace.

Feb 22, 2021 | Full Review…

Unsurprisingly, it's Thompson who acts as the show's anchor and glue. Making him the face of a chipper morning show is a sharp choice, as it gives Thompson plenty of room to indulge his hammier comedy instincts.

Feb 16, 2021 | Full Review…

Kenan conjures a few funny lines and gives Thompson a ready-for-primetime chance to demonstrate he can handle more than just one-liners. But the premise and supporting players are so slim, the possibilities feel pretty well exhausted by the pilot alone.

Feb 16, 2021 | Full Review…

It's a warm and funny slice of comfort viewing featuring a winning performance by Thompson, strong work from the supporting cast and some admirably though-provoking, issues-based situations baked into the comedy.

Feb 16, 2021 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…

Kenan is as comforting and as easy to ingest as a warm bowl of oatmeal -- a reliable pleasure, if not a shock to the senses.

Mar 4, 2021 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

It's difficult to address hard topics such as grief and depression while still trying to keep the tone light for all audiences, but Kenan seems like it's found the right formula.

Feb 17, 2021 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

Kenan Thompson makes for a strong center to what looks like will be a warm family sitcom.

Feb 17, 2021 | Full Review…

Straight from the tomb of the harried-single-parent genre, it's a stale casserole of Saturday Night Live leftovers.

Feb 16, 2021 | Full Review…

While Kenan may not be groundbreaking comedy on its face, it provides much needed emotional comfort and laughs and that's invaluable right now.

Feb 16, 2021 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Cutting edge it isn't, but funny? Absolutely. Thompson is a natural.

Feb 16, 2021 | Full Review…

There's some humor to be mined in flashbacks illustrating how Kenan and his wife met on the set of a sitcom, but the present-day stuff is pretty unfunny, marking this series as a dud on arrival.

To have the premis of a sitcom be the death of the main character's wife, who we never see is RIDICULOUS ! Can't the producers come up with ANYTHING better ? You have two (2) very funny stars with comedy backgrounds and this is the crap you come up with ? I couldn't take it every time they kept mentioning the DEAD wife. I hoped the next episode with cute this problem but no luck there. How soon can they CANCEL this mess or hopefully find a new writer or theme for this "comedy" ?

Ufff, Kenan needs to go back to SNL

Wanted to like this so much. Just underwhelmed. Love Kenan and Don Johnson but the rest of the cast is very weak/stereotypical. The little girls are cute, but after 2 episodes, I don't know if I'll watch a third.

Love Kennan Thompson on Saturday Night Live. Just about all he does is very funny. We were so looking forward to another comedy show we could get into like Modern Family, The Office, Seinfeld, etc. After fifteen minutes we turned Kennan off and decided not to record any future episodes. It was just terrible. It wasn't funny. It was all a bit annoying. It looked like it had great promise - single dad, kids, etc. What a shame.

It needs to find its footing, but "Kenan" is hilarious which is no surprise given those behind it.
  • Feb 17, 2021
It's very similar - you could say too similar - to Full House. But despite that, it's funny and has a great lead in Kenan Thompson.
  • Feb 17, 2021
In an alternate universe this is a well written, funny show... not here though. Worse than most network sitcoms which is a pretty low bar anyway.

WOW- Expected more from Kenan and Lorne. . "C" all around. See it quickly. This won't be around long.
