Critics Consensus

Kitchen Confidential is confidently prepared and served with an amiable ensemble, but struggles to find a satisfying flavor with too many wild antics thrown into the sauce.

The cast is attractive, the show's look is sleek, the pace is frantic, but Kitchen Confidential isn't especially funny.

Behind all the familiar farce are inviting actors and characters, attractive production values, and executive producer Darren Star. Given those high-quality ingredients, the show... could easily graduate from promising to satisfying.

It's no "Big Night," but with Bonnie Somerville, Owain Yeoman, Jaime King, Nicholas Brendon as other restaurant staffers, Kitchen Confidential is a nice place to visit.

Turns out that not only was Kitchen Confidential a good show, but it had some moments of brilliance.

Bradley Cooper is an interesting choice to play Bourdain: His face can seem either sharply hawklike or soft, almost puppyish. These irreconcilables coexist, somehow, and make him appealing.

Ultimately, it's the cast that provides the solid foundation for the show. It's one of those odd instances where I can say there isn't a weak link the whole chain.

Backstage antics are what's supposed to make Kitchen Confidential hilarious, but instead the characters just come off as juvenile.

I wonder how many people will buy Star's re-categorization of this sitcom as, no joke, "a single-camera film comedy." That's a flowery way of explaining why it isn't a laugh-a-minute free-for-all.

It didn't know what show it wanted to be, and in turn, it floundered between two identities.

A typical episode starts with a reasonable restaurant situation and then builds to a level of absurdity that might be forgivable if it weren't so generally unfunny.

Unfortunately, what's missing from Fox's Kitchen Confidential is laughs. This sitcom twist on the life of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain turns Bourdain into Alias' Bradley Cooper, a personable actor but not the comic diva the role requires.
