Liar: Season 1 (2017)

Season 1
Liar

Critics Consensus

Liar has just enough twists to make it more than just another thriller -- though its treatment of sensitive issues leaves something to be desired.

Critic Reviews for Liar Season 1

All Critics (27) | Top Critics (9)

It's all moderately gripping, I suppose. The performances are workmanlike, and the mood suitably tricksy.

Unfortunately, [Liar] found itself out-gimmicked and outgunned by its writers' other creation, whodunit-in-reverse Rellik over on BBC One.

Sep 13, 2017 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

In the end, Liar isn't the show we were hoping it would be. As is so often the case, lies might make for the better narrative, and the truth is an unpleasant one.

... every fresh twist forces us to question our own allegiances.

Liar is the sort of psychological thriller that will leave you lying awake in bed, turning over the evidence in your mind and trying to get at the truth - even though the answer remains elusive.

Instead, it becomes a cat and mouse game of often boneheaded moves that become more baffling and outrageous as the series continues, with little sense of motivation or development of its characters.

I could forgive their simplified storytelling if the effect was as dazzling as their previous work. Instead, Liar was disappointing in its lack of nuance and unbelievable lines.

Liar's depiction of rape wasn't just insensitive, it was reckless.

The conditions are ripe to force the audience to question the motives of everyone involved, and even themselves for indulging in this odd, queasy genre of 'rape thriller'.

This is such an interesting show.

Audience Reviews for Liar: Season 1

  • Dec 14, 2018
Four stars because of the excellent acting all around, especially Joanne Frogget. I wish they had left the scene out where Laura ties up the perpetrator which was very unrealistic .
  • Sep 20, 2018
As a special victim's counsel as well as as a prosecutor of sexual assault crimes it was great to see the layered issues surrounding a date rape scenario and the trauma it inflicts was reasonably portrayed by excellent acting.
  • Dec 23, 2017
Very intriguing first three episodes, but then this drama drops substantially in story line quality. The interesting subplots lead absolutely nowhere, and the finale of the main plot is inelegant and extremely disappointing.

I watched three episodes of this show, and just were I thought the emotionality was reaching it's top and do something with the premiss, it went back to the cliched route of a villain who is cleverly lying to everyone. The performances are very good, but the story just went in a route that a hundred other products had gone.

    watchable, but sort of annoying

ITV's Liar is a well made series, excellent acting, I'd love some simple changes to push the story along in a slightly different direction, keeping us the viewer in the dark longer.

Started off great, then quickly deteriorated after the first episode to the predictable, and the unbelievable. What a waste.

Liar on Sundance TV has me hooked!! Episode 1 was interesting enough to get me to #2, and that episode grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Great writing and acting, even by supporting cast. Balanced plot keeps me guessing who's lying and what actually happened. It's also a little "Americanized" so we can understand it on this side of the pond, but definitely English enough for its own identity, which adds to its interest. This is an original from Sundance TV?!! Kudos to you, and lets have more of the same.

1 episode in, it has me curious enough to want to see what happens next.
