Critic Reviews for Locke & Key Season 1
All Critics (61) | Top Critics (18) | Fresh (40) | Rotten (21)
Rarely does the visual storytelling match the heightened emotional experience of our young heroes.
For a show that deals so intently with loss - of loved ones, of innocence - Locke & Key is a surprisingly rewarding endeavor.
The world building in Locke & Key is impeccable, mixing the mundanities of school and family life seamlessly with colorful fantasy set pieces. It's pacey and looks great, but it's also a sweet show about a family who cares about each other.
Director Michael Morris brings a warmth to the halls of Keyhouse Manor that highlights the shadows creeping in the corner to great effect.
Locke & Key isn't at all shy about revealing Key House's incredible secrets; it just struggles to then do much with them, instead repeatedly hitting pause on any acquired momentum to dive back into high school dating/movie club drama.
The series is simultaneously attempting to be a compelling family drama, supernatural thriller, murder mystery, and high school dramedy throughout Season 1, and by attempting to serve several masters, it never completely feels like a cohesive whole
Locke & Key often doesn't go through its most interesting doors. Which is frustrating, because it is asking really intriguing questions.
New fans might enjoy the show's playful tone, but those expecting the comics' darker side will be disappointed.
The real standout so far has to be the sheer scope and intricacy of the production and set design from Rory Cheyne and David Blass.
...[it] does deviate greatly from the comic, but each time it does, there is a solid reason that makes sense for a live-action adaptation...I know that people will fall in love with Locke & Key, and I can't wait to see that happen.
Locke & Key makes an iron-clad argument on why it should be one of Netflix's flagships moving forward, even more so in a world of cluttered comic book adaptations. The streamer has made something well worth the wait.
I loved the first season of Netflix's Locke & Key adaptation, which brilliantly skirts the line between horror, drama, comedy and dark fantasy the comics by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez helped innovate.

5h agoI think this show is gonna be another "Stranger Things" - initially promising, but then they don't know how to move forward, making the plot derail into cheesiness and nonsense. Classic Netflix. It's funny to see how good ideas for a show are tarnished by poor screenwriting. It's also sad because in this case the actors were good, especially the young boy. My advice to Netflix: - Stop making the characters taking ridiculous decisions and silly unforced errors just because it gives you an easy way out for your story - Cut down the cheesy scenes, they are unnecessary and make the show cheap and unbearable - Invest in quality: hire some people to revise your scripts and story. Make them watch what you produce before releasing it

Feb 14, 2021Honestly, what can I say? The casting, the soundtrack, the plot, the creativity, the realism, the surface lessons and deep morals, the intense sequel buildup, everything on this show is perfect. Plus Dodge is quite easily the best thing about this show; she's an extremely multi-dimensional, morally intriguing, emotionally complicated and absolutely badass and impossibly attractive female lead who quite easily steals the show. The adorable Bode, charming Duncan, and charismatic Kinsey are easily seconds. The genuine ways the show deals with PTSD and the buildup to the unleashing of shadow demons by yours truly just make it even better. A show that stays true to the comics and offers plenty of pure screenwriter adrenaline ahead is clearly one to top most others. May the second season help bring this show to the level of intense appreciation and Internet presence it deserves.

Jan 28, 2021I'm so tired of lazy writing and beyond stupid actions to just move the plot along... go into caves without checking the tide charts knowing people have drowned there... this series is full of crap like that... and like other posts I really wanted to like this show, but you'd have to be brain dead to not see all the garbage and bad acting in it... the writers should use the brain key and fix the show!

Jan 24, 2021There is so WTF moments on the story side. if very slow to start, also very slow to start the end. its seems very rushed brainstorming of the scenario
-
Jan 23, 2021Absolutely phenomenal series can't wait for future seasons watched the first one so many times the cast have incredible chemistry and are insanely talented.
-
Jan 20, 2021At first, I thought that the premise was good, intriguing, but then, here we go again with yet another typical example of bias towards the female-centric approach. Because whamen know better, do anything better than men, all the men are utter idiots, and the female characters keep on lecturing them and patronizing them all the way, even among teenagers. Frankly, I'm sick of this trend.

Jan 10, 2021Show spoils itself less than three episodes in, not very good.
-
Dec 29, 2020Terrible writing, terrible casting, and terrible acting. Top honors for worst acting for the mother.
-
Dec 23, 2020If you're a fantasy fanatic, this is for you! The concept is super creative with a storyline that can be better. It's pretty lit, tbh!
-
Dec 13, 2020It's a shame, really, because I genuinely wanted to like this show, and the first couple of episodes were promising. It didn't last long, however. Generally unlikeable characters, plot/character development that nobody genuinely paying attention to the show would buy. Plot holes so big, if you weren't paying attention, you'd fall through the floor. Neat premise. Not entertaining enough to carry the weak execution. Definitely passing on season 2.
