The history of the house and its mysterious keys starts to come into focus, but the pace never reaches the necessary intensity. Maybe... Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill were saving their ammunition for subsequent series, assuming there'll be any.

Alas, that tonal shift regulates much of Locke & Key's original unhinged diabolical entertainment, and not for the better.

Season one ofLocke & Key gives us a feasible starting point for what could be a flourishing new fantasy series.

Even as a distraction, Locke & Key looks like a misfire. The little guy Bode is a captivating character, but not as enchanting as any figure in Stranger Things.

Locke & Key ends up not being the story of a family in a spooky old house, but the story of a forever-expanding cast of cardboard characters gnawing through bad dialogue.

Will Locke & Key scratch the itch of people waiting for the next season of Stranger Things? Maybe. But it may also gain its own fans via what looks to be an intriguing story and just enough creeps to keep people interested.

It is, at heart, a horror-tinged fantasy epic, but before all the spooky stuff really kicks in, it begins as a textured and wrenching story of loss.
