Based on the Walt Longmire mystery novels by best-selling author Craig Johnson, this contemporary crime drama stars Australian actor Robert Taylor in the title role, the charismatic and dedicated sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyo. Longmire patrols the county with a brave face and sense of humor, but deep inside he hides the pain of his wife's recent death. With the urging of his daughter, Cady, and the help of Vic, a new female deputy, Longmire gains a new appreciation of his job and decides to run for re-election. He's committed to putting his life back together, one piece at a time, and he often calls on best friend and confidant Henry Standing Bear for support.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A deliberately paced police procedural, Longmire sometimes lumbers aimlessly but mostly rewards viewer patience with its charming cast and distinctive locale.

It's about the best combination of substance and style. And when it comes to entertainment, you can't get much cooler than that. Go to Full Review

I'd like to see the mysteries grow more engaging as the series moves along, but "Longmire" at least starts with a good foundation in Walt, his sidekicks, and the wide, open spaces they travel. Go to Full Review

There are certainly elements of charm, good acting, and the possibility of an improving series as it proceeds. Go to Full Review

What makes Sheriff Longmire so much fun to watch is that he uses his book smarts and cowboy training instead of the latest tech to help him solve crimes. Go to Full Review

The series has plenty of room to grow; I left the pilot wanting to know more about all the characters, but especially about Longmire. Go to Full Review

Jennifer M. @Jennym1982 Jun 1 It is A great show with A great cast, the story lines really make you hooked to the show it self. See more Kat H. @Kathat223 Feb 20 What a shame! Fantastic cast and they threw Katie Sackoff in the mix with her ridiculously fake pouty facial expressions. I know of a few people besides myself that could not get past her acting. Her character did not fit into the script at all. There are so many great female actors that could have pulled off the part. It's right up there with "Walker", played by Jared Padlecki. Way to take a great script and ruin it with poor acting. See more A.L.Jude P @judebd 12/25/2024 On of the most pragmatic, real life cop drama. See more Jay W @RT52162311 12/02/2024 Elevator pitch for "Longmire" it is a neo-western, about an old fashioned sheriff solving crimes in his little town. The show has all the trademarks of classic westerns, but set in a modern times. There are cowboys, Indians, duels and shootouts. The series lead, Walt Longmire, is very much a man that doesn't seem to fit in to this modern world. He doesn't have a cellphone, he struggles with technology and has very old fashioned sensibility. As pointed out by characters in the show, he seems to have been born at the wrong time. This show does a great job with its characters. Throughout the series, I can not find an example where a character acted in a way that did not seem to be a natural progression of the character. These characters are flawed, they make frustrating mistakes at times, but it always feels character driven. The series is also able to shake up the formula in just the right way. Sometimes the audience will know the solution to the mystery, and we wait in suspense to see what will come of it. Other times we are given all the clues to solve the mystery, but the characters are able to piece it together just in time. Some mysteries are solved within an episode, others take over a season. The show balances having entertaining episodic adventures, while at the same time having a compelling over-arching story for the series. There are a few moments where the showrunners seem to deliberately mislead the audience. But when streaming the series, those moments are easier to overlook. There are also a few side stories throughout the series that lacked any emotional impact or dramatic tension. What holds this series back from being an all time great, is every time they try to do something other than "neo western crime solving", it doesn't do it very well. For example, every time they try to do romance in this series, it falls flat. Every time the series tried to introduce a romantic subplot for the character, the pacing and energy of the show would drag. These writers and characters couldn't do romance, they would have been better off skipping it entirely. But other than those problems, I highly recommend the show. It is a solid series throughout its whole run. Looking for a new series, saddle up and give this one a try. See more 04/11/2022 An interesting and extremely watchable modern day Western. Excellent cast and crew. Never pretentious. See more 07/01/2021 A refreshing change from all the empty run-of-the-mill, same-same supply of grub. Great characters, slow-paced developments, brains and brawns, scenery and superlative acting. Don't mess with it! See more Read all reviews
