What was once a rollicking family-based sci-fi adventure story is now a dreary family drama with sci-fi trappings about people who really don't seem to like each other very much...

There are many good things about Netflix's expensive remake of the 1960s cult favourite... But crisp storytelling is not one of its virtues.

If I were a kid I probably would've finished the season by now, instead of taking a break after five; it's pretty decent.

[The robot] revelation provides much of the tension and conflict.

It may not be quite interesting enough for anybody who isn't already a mad fan of the genre, and probably a bit too vanilla even for anybody over the age of 12 who is.

But the show's secret weapon is the casting of Parker Posey, the queen of 1990s indie movies like "Party Girl," as the traitorous Dr. Smith.

Remake of 1960s sci-fi series is classic fun; some violence.

It's not dark, or gritty. It has a little bit of everything: humor, action, aliens, danger, mystery, and plot-holes you can drive a flying saucer through. But you can actually watch it with your kids and parents and have a good time. And I'm here for that

The new Lost In Space offers a more complex take on the characters, a vivid visual aesthetic and a pilot that throws us into the action along with the Space Family Robinson, expanding the scope of the story and using flashbacks to fill us in on everyone..

But the new Lost in Space is best when it's being itself. The grace notes, the moments of bonding and the subtle, socially conscious subtext all create a strong identity, and a persuasive voice.

A slick new space adventure with great modern family dynamics and light touches of science fiction.

At this stage of the game, Lost in Space is promising; with closer attention to tone it could be a future classic a couple of seasons down the track.

Mostly this new version, basically as family friendly as the original, provides the audience with a taste of nostalgia without over serving them.

In a best-case scenario, Netflix could've ended up with kid-friendly Westworld. Instead, a sugary piece of bubblegum that gets old quickly.

Still feels Americanly anodyne, safe, and, even for something aimed at being "family-friendly", tedious to the point of catalepsy, and no amount of CGI can or should fix that.

But with the addition of strong production values, the grit of good stuntwork in hardscrabble locations, a fine cast, a hatful of decent directors, here is a buoyant commitment to Saturday-morning serial, edge-of-the-sofa thrill for thrill's abundant sake

When most series and reboots choose to go gritty and appeal to a more adult audience, Lost In Space heads in the opposite direction and delivers a fun, family friendly sci-fi adventure...

Actually, there's something kind of great about taking a terrible show and turning it into a good one. And this Lost in Space is good.

If Lost in Space gets a second season - which seems likely, given the sunk costs Netflix has expended on set construction alone - here's hoping Parker Posey's snaky Doctor Smith and Molly Parker's suffer-no-fools Maureen get more to do.

The real pleasure of "Lost in Space," beyond some competently handled action, are the appealing performances of Ms. Russell, Ms. Sundvall and Mr. Jenkins as the Robinson children. If you decide to take the trip, they're excellent company.
