Critics Consensus

Michael Cimino charms in Love, Victor, a sincere and sweet - if safe - spin-off with a lot of heart.

Critic Reviews for Love, Victor Season 1

All Critics (40) | Top Critics (12)

Despite the differences between their leads, Love, Victor conforms exactly to the narrative shape and modest, crowd-pleasing ambitions of the film that preceded it.

There are far worse evaluations one could assign to a series than being harmless and kind, like a boy your mother would love you to date, which both Victor and "Love, Victor" prove to be.

It's a touching, beautifully handled piece of television to celebrate this socially distanced, lockdown Pride month with.

Shows like this one can play an important educational role for young people exploring their sexuality, but also friends of LGBTQ teenagers and their relatives. [Full review in Spanish]

Love, Victor centers characters of color, but never quite digs into what that means.

While it doesn't quite replicate the emotional weight of its predecessor, Love, Victor has enough charm and saccharine to gain an invested audience.

It looks and talks like a teen drama, full of the kind of angst and twists common to most young adult TV series. That also happens to be why it stands out and works rather well.

Everything about Love, Victor feels like home. The setting and cinematography are instantly recognizable, as are the teachers, and the score of off-beat indie tunes sets an all too familiar tone.

Jun 22, 2020 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

It's not the stuff that's going to walk away with a slew of major awards. But it is the kind of show that will hopefully make some teens going through the same inner turmoil feel a little less alone and a lot more seen.

An incredibly compelling and nicely messy first season of a television show. There's so much for the show to explore in coming seasons and with character's this rich, it will surely be a fun time.

Love, Victor suggests there's a spring coming, one where queer youths guide and help each other through a still difficult world.

The show succeeds just fine on its own - it's charming and clever and gives a few reasons to swoon... It could have represented something bigger, though, rather than standing as yet another example of Disney copping out.

Audience Reviews for Love, Victor: Season 1

Im a gay man, and though I too had struggles coming out as a teen, I found some problems with this series. what really annoys me about both Love Simon and Love Victor is that both stories are so unapologetically self centered and completely devoid of any true remorse for the girls that the protagonists ostensibly use, manipulate, and ultimately discard once they are brave enough to admit who they are. In any other context, if the male lead in the story was straight and only using a girl to get to what he truly wants, then we'd view him as creepy or deem him to be a douchebag. So why is this different? Are we just supposed to have sympathy for Victor after he lies and manipulated Mia just because he "thinks she's great"? I honestly don't think these films take a responsible look at the pain gay closeted men cause to the women they lie to and pretend to like, as they fumble through "figuring themselves out". We are ultimately just supposed to forgive the gay protagonist because he was conflicted and confused. I do think that there needs to be some level of responsibility taken, or blame assigned to gay men who use women for their own selfish gain. Yes, i am a gay man and though other gay men may not agree wholeheartedly, I do think there is a bit of a reckoning that needs to happen in order to take ownership for wronging these female "beards" that far too many gay men utilize to mask the fear they have of facing who they are.

An amazing show. I was a big fan of the original book, Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda, so I went into Love, Simon with high expectations and I was kind of disappointed. Love, Simon was a decent movie but it wasn't spectacular and I felt like no one could really criticize it too harshly because it has a good message. THIS SHOW, however, is the complete opposite. I absolutely love it, not because it is so important for representation sake but because it is genuinely so good. All of the characters are well thought out and have their own individual arcs, the storylines are engaging and interesting, the acting is very very good. The plots and themes that they touched on was real and not just surface level. I 100% recommend this show. So good!

I loved this series!! It shows how life can be really confusing for lgbtq+ teenagers and that it isn't a perfectly paved, straight road to coming out. I loved the plot, storyline, and representation. It's so beautiful to see in 2020.

A fresh and in-depth delve into the world that surrounded Simon in Creekwood. It allows it's characters to explore more of the serious issues of love, sexuality, friendship, and family while managing to never feel too heavy-handed. An absolute recommend for fans of Love, Simon.

It is a good series, in general I liked it although it lacks the gay feeling since it is shown until the seventh or sixth chapter, that is, the main point is the gay plot due to being a remake of Love, Simon, it takes a season new to develop the character as gay since in this one he only discovers himself and spends 60% of the series being heterosexual or bisexual with Mia ... In conclusion I liked it a lot but it lacked the gay thing. I am looking forward to a second season.

Love, Victor has a great story that keeps expanding steadily, ready to become a longer-lasting series. Already filled with several distinctive characters from the youngest boy in the family to the lead character and his closest friends. Will love to see more from the new school principal (the previous theater teacher in Love, Simon.) A shout out to Hulu for bringing this series.

Hermosa, serie. Demasiado adictiva. Mucho mejor que Love, Simón.

The acting was superb and loved how the stories of all of the characters created the theme of the show.

OMG.... After the first episode I was excited but then instantly hooked.... Victor is an amazing young man everything I would ever hope for a pray for in a relationship... Then while watching episode 2 I was so excited and happy for him it brought me to tears. And every episode after that I cried out of JOY watching this beautiful young man grow into the most wonderful human being on earth. I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT SEEING A SEASON 2.
