And yet, there's still so much of Luke Cage that feels like half measures... from the underwhelming antagonists, to the ridiculously inept pacing... and the creeping feeling that this show was built to fit into the mold of other Marvel shows.

Every so often, Cage expresses ambivalence about violence, or wonders whether the collateral damage of his war with Stokes is worth it. These are reasonable questions, but the series reflexively and repeatedly dismisses them.

There are excellent performances, lots of engaging references and the odd good scene or line, but overall it lacks substance, reality and grit.

As a character, Luke Cage may have indestructible skin and a rock-solid frame, but as a show, Luke Cage has those very same characteristics.

It can be a tough act to balance, and seeing him navigate those treacherous waters is what makes Marvel's Luke Cage a great fixture to follow, even more so for its progressive and inclusive nature.

Everything about the show is nothing short of extraordinary.

I honestly can think of no TV show that has given as much room, as much attention, as much love to black women as Luke Cage.

Luke Cage... [is] strong and easy to root for.

It's a soulful hip-hop western blend of Hercules and The Wire, with a breakout cast, and enough style, surprises and strong action to paper over a few of its more repetitive beats.

The show's vibrant Harlem setting, like its pulsing hip-hop soundtrack, is affirming by design-a means of waking audiences up to black excellence.

Marvel's Luke Cage is by far the most intriguing, most political and least cartoonish of Netflix's fast-growing folio of interconnected Marvel franchises.

Cage's departure from the mercenary lifestyle serves as a marker for a more politically and socially aware story.

I loved this show. I really loved this show. It was so good.

Marvel's Netflix series are often complex character studies, but it would be refreshing to see those studies occur in smaller stories...it takes 13 full episodes to handle men who have none of the superpowers that our villains have.

Instead, Marvel's Luke Cage is innovative in the exciting ways it blends classic film and television genres - such as noir, crime, western, and superhero - together to create its own unique vibe.

Its ambitions are greater than those of Netflix's other Marvel series, reliant more on character that than comic book conventions. There are the bones of a brilliant series here, if it can conjure a more propulsive story.

Luke Cage feels less like Jessica Jones or Daredevil and more like Shaft - but with none of the humor or charm that Richard Roundtree brought to that role in the 1970s.
May 31, 2017
Luke Cage surges forward with power, grace and undeniable style, and takes viewers right along with it.

Even though it has its moments of not-quite-ready-for-the-big-time, I'm hooked. Stand-out performances from the always-stellar Alfre Woodard and Mahershala Ali help.

We get some of the strongest characterization and worldbuilding in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
