Acclaimed writer Hans Rosenfeldt continues his first British drama following the international success of the Swedish/Danish series "The Bridge." Anna Friel stars in the lead role of Marcella Backland, a British police detective working in contemporary London. Set in Rosenfeldt's unique style of "Nordic noir," the body of a missing child is discovered inside a wall and a task force is assembled to catch the killer. A complex set of characters from all walks of life and interweaving storylines take viewers on a dark and emotional journey with turns at every corner.

When the protagonist is female, as she is in Netflix's binge-worthy crime noir Marcella, the drama at home can be nearly as intense as the murder mystery. Go to Full Review

Complex, ultradark, and filled with more red herrings than an Agatha Christie novel, Marcella is a unique, powerful crime drama. Go to Full Review

For lovers of British crime drama, it's a very pleasant puzzle. Go to Full Review

Not only is the basic premise of this crime thriller duller than we'd hoped, the acting is too. Go to Full Review
Ben Dowell Radio Times 01/28/2019
Rosenfeldt likes his dramas long, complex and tortured and you get the feeling that the Swede will make good on his promise to cram in more "hooks, twists and red herrings" (his words) before our time is up. Go to Full Review

Marcella starts off well, but pretty soon its pace is impeded by a number of subplots and the abrupt introductions of characters whose role in the overall plot is either unclear or irrelevant. Go to Full Review

Annick G Oct 28 This show is pretty decent but the random, loud, obnoxious noise they added to every single scene is just too much. Only way for me to watch this is with subtitles at half volume. See more Ken D @mynameisken Aug 23 the show tries to do way too much. it should've focused on one or two crimes instead of like five and that's when the show loses me completely. too many leads, too many vicitms, too many conflicts, too many everything and none is done masterfully. See more Philip T 01/23/2025 There are so many holes and unresolved questions in the plot of this that it sort of ruins the whole thing. But other people have brought this up on Reddit and other places so I won't go through all of them. However, there is one that I have not seen anyone bring up that really bothers me, because I've seen this in a few other detective mysteries lately so I guess it is the new fad among mediocre writers. That is where the detective rushes into the scene WITHOUT BACKUP and it gets them into trouble. And it has always been with a female detective--- because they're hysterical and can't control their emotions? Doesn't reflect well on female detectives. Any well trained cop knows to NEVER try to enter a scene to capture a murderer without at least CALLING for backup before entering (unless they actually see the killer in the process of killing someone right before their eyes.) There are two ways to move the narrative forward--- with characters doing smart things and characters doing stupid things. Over 90% of TV shows and movies I've seen, especially those written by mediocre writers, move the action forward by the character doing stupid things. This is just another example. Also, Marcella's "fugue" states don't seem believable to me at all--- they just seem overwrought and silly. See more Krishna K 01/24/2024 it was good for most part but the unpleasant sound effects are very annoying, maybe its was a poor effort to recreate the mental state of the protagonist in the audience, binge watching could cause head ache, felt like cruel joke, I would have given it a better rating if it wasn't for that sound since its a TV series, being realistic does not mean it has to be unpleasant, See more Read all reviews
