Critic Reviews for Marvel's Agent Carter Season 1

The series successfully blends super-heroics with women's post-war fight against sexism in a fun, winking way.

Peggy deserved her own story line and now she's got one.

With a star-making turn from Atwell and an overwhelming air of fun, it was a treat for both Marvel converts and new viewers.

Agent Carter is ridiculously enjoyable. Despite not having the strongest story (another glittering orb Marvel? really?), the show is quick, genuinely fun, and Hayley Atwell is a damn delight as Peggy Carter.

Atwell brings some presence to the lead role, flashing specs of vulnerability while mostly keeping her shoulder to the wheel.

To make Agent Carter work, and work well, Atwell and ABC knew she needed to be a relatable human first, and a subsidiary member of the populous Marvel universe second. Those priorities are straightened out efficiently on Tuesday's (opening) episode.

A stylish, fast-moving dramatic series with good humor that has an excellent cast of recognizable faces, if not names.

Fun, stylish and energetic, Marvel's Agent Carter is everything we wanted it to be - and everything Marvel Studios' first foray into lady adventure character stories should be.

Jun 21, 2018 | Full Review…

Agent Carter has never leaned too heavily on action; that's just not what makes it exciting. The show follows its own rhythm, one that's a little more laid back than the Marvel films.

Wasted premise - could have been so much more. Peggy Carter certainly deserves so much more.

'Marvel's Agent Carter' is a worthy show that uses its charm and style to make you fall in love with the time period. The characters are all extremely likable - most of all Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter - giving some important energy to the already fun story.

Agent Carter is a weird show. Not weird in itself, but weird with where it went. I think if this show was given another chance it could do pretty well, and considering one two characters from here have been in both the movies and TV show, then that has to be something. It is a really fun show, and while it's not incredible, you really get into the era this is set in, and that is due to how likable Peggy is. She's a great protagonist and you get some great stuff from here post-Steve. Overall, I wish this had continued because it could have been so much more.

Despite being a non-superhero Marvel vehicle, Agent Carter packs more of a punch than most of the other series in this genre. Peggy Carter is relatable, smart, quick-witted, gorgeous, and stylish in every way. A great story that Hayley Atwell's Carter can carry on her own but it was fun to have numerous cameos from Captain America, with some strong new characters thrown in. Beautifully styled period piece too: from the automat, to the soundtrack, to every single one of Peggy Carter's gorgeous suits.

    Agent Carter rocked!
  • May 30, 2019
Excellent first season, which unfortunately goes downhill in the second. Peggy Carter is smart, very sexy, and very watchable.
  • May 20, 2019
Such an amazing prequel TV show! :) I wish it was still around
  • May 05, 2019
Not very good, overall a disappointment, but the acting and casting was pretty great

Where its films have given us plenty of great female characters, but mostly limited them to supporting parts, Marvel's television offerings have time and again been a haven for strong women in leading roles. Hayley Atwell's return as Peggy Carter is a terrific follow-up to 'The First Avenger' and a welcome continuation of the character's story. Picking back up in the 1940's, 'Agent Carter' has tons of fun with its era, even handling heavier material like sexism with a light, but genuine hand that highlights the proud strengths of its lead character. Atwell's chemistry with the delightful James D'Arcy (playing the Stark family's original, non-AI butler, Jarvis) is off the charts, and Dominic Cooper's recurring guest role as Howard Stark evens out the show's so-so villains. A good dose of science-fiction also makes the period setting exponentially more interesting, leading to some innovative set pieces and old-school brawls a cut above the TV standard.

Full of action, humor and marvelous performances by Hayley Atwell, James D'Arcy, Chad Michael Murray, Enver Gjokaj and Shea Whigham, plus an engaging storyline, Marvel's Agent Carter started very well and showed us again the charismatic and fantastic character that is Peggy Carter
