Based on the title character introduced in James M. Cain's classic 1941 novel, the five-part miniseries stars Kate Winslet as young mother Mildred Pierce, who struggles to make a new life for her and her two daughters after divorcing her husband. Searching for work during the Depression proves troublesome until Mildred meets a waitress named Ida, who works at a local diner. With Ida's help, Mildred, a talented baker, begins selling her homemade pies at the diner. Soon she is operating her own chicken and pie restaurant, and then other eateries too. But while business is booming, Mildred's personal life is not, leading to a regrettable confrontation between her and daughter Veda.

You haven't seen authentic melodrama until you've seen this, Todd Haynes's slow, simmering adaptation of the James M. Cain novel. Go to Full Review

There's no way to say it without sounding hyperbolic - this is one of the best things to ever air on television. Go to Full Review

I think [author James M.] Cain would marvel at the acting and production values, but roll his eyes at the plodding pace... And yet Mildred Pierce has a visceral, snake-farm fascination. Go to Full Review

Myself, I found the range of expression with which [Joan Crawford] greeted divorce, death, re-marriage, financial ruin and murder so delicate as to approximate to indifference. Go to Full Review

Haynes's Mildred Pierce is reminiscent of an earlier period when American writers and filmmakers knew something. Go to Full Review

Still, it all looks so wonderful and the performances are so carefully wrought that you may well find yourself leaning back to enjoy the ride, forgetting for the time being that the narrative is advancing with the reckless velocity of an iceberg... Go to Full Review

Alain E @AlainE Sep 27 The combination of the director and the protagonist produces a superb result. The only weakness in my opinion is the ending that comes anticlimactic, but apparently that’s what is in the book. Haynes avoids to slide into a cheap melodrama. When something really sad happens in the second episode, it will bring tears in your eyes. Sex scenes are rendered realistically, without exploitation. There is convincing depiction of conditions in the 1930s. I was not familiar with blood transfusion being used to treat infections. There is very good music, both popular and classical. Excellent color cinematography and I suspect intentional use of grainy image to indicate that we are witnessing something almost a hundred years ago. See more MJ S Apr 30 How fortunate we are to be living at the same time as Kate Winslet. She is a marvel of an actor. Her range is unmatched. Kate can play anything and Mildred Pierce is no exception. As always she melts into the role and brings a light, authenticity, charm, and depth that few actors can achieve on such a consistent level. Mildred Pierce is a beauitful period study on womanhood, family dynamics, and love. All of the actors are great and it is always a treat to see Kate and Guy Pearce playing opposite one another. Incredible music, gorgeous cinematography, and impressive costumes. A must watch. Loved it. See more Dani G 08/01/2024 Kate Winslet, impecable as always. The series, OK. It's good, but I think it was a little downward at the end, focusing heavily on the daughter. See more pj m 03/14/2022 What a cast! Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce are so good together. See more 03/20/2021 It was a good story. I found Mildred & her daughter were not authentic characters. Mildred was too kind & soft, hardly like Joan Crawford in the original movie made in 1945. Veda was not convincing & was over acting. It's very difficult to remake early Hollywood movies. See more 11/27/2020 A warming 1930 vibe. letting us through the Great Depression atmosphere. The story of family and sacrifice. Evan Rachel Wood perfectly played her role of a spoiled child, so good until you despise her character.
