News & Interviews for Murder on Middle Beach: Season 1
The emotional foundation of a torn-apart family is what strengthens Murder on Middle Beach but it's also a fascinating mystery without the personal touch.
It doesn't have a tidy ending, but grief rarely does. Filmmakers could learn a lot from how Madison Hamburg focuses on the emotional ripple effects of crime, and the very human toll that loss takes on a family and community.
On the one hand, if anyone has the right to tell this story, it's Hamburg. And the human toll of his investigation is very close to the surface in Murder On Middle Beach, particularly when his questions get more pointed later on.
The Serial-style mystery rarely comes together in as traditionally satisfying a whodunit way as you might hope for... but the way the series gels is as the latest meta examination of why we're attracted to true crime in all its forms.
Murder on Middle Beach is one of the most intense and emotional true-crime docuseries ever made.
Despite periodic awkwardness, Mr. Hamburg's film succeeds in sustaining the emotional weight of this enterprise.
...although the first of four episodes starts off slowly, we soon become engrossed in the journey of 28-year-old Beach as he tries to solve the mystery of who murdered his beloved mother in 2010.
One true crime docuseries I'd highly recommend is HBO's Murder on Middle Beach, following a young man's fight to solve his mother's mysterious murder. It's a wild tale...
Pays careful attention to complex human behavior, all viewed through the humility of its filmmaker.
The family and town dynamics at play in Murder On Middle Beach will keep us watching, even if we wish the series was a bit faster-paced.
Audience Reviews for Murder on Middle Beach: Season 1
6h agoYou'll need someone else who has also seen the show to talk to. After the end you want to "debrief" with someone.
Dec 30, 2020This is so well done. Madison is a talented young filmmaker who somehow manages to tell the story of his mother's murder, methodically and objectively. Every layer brings you further into the crazy world that is his family and often has you changing your mind as to people's innocence or guilt just as it must be running through Madison's mind. It deserves a second season as there's still a lot more story to tell.
Dec 23, 2020I found this documentary to be surprisingly compelling. It's curious that certain people disliked this work due to no pat ending being offered. Guess what, that's often the case in life.
Dec 21, 2020Emotionally affecting and one of the best looks into a modern family that you'll find.
Dec 12, 2020The son of a murdered woman investigates her death. There are some strange stories and characters along the way – several twists and turns. The ending is a little disappointing, but I actually think it's quite clear who is responsible, and it's interesting to hear or guess who the people in the woman's life think is responsible. I watched this right after The Undoing, and it is fascinating to realize they both feature a very similar person.
Dec 12, 2020I watched all four episodes and enjoyed them all until the end. THERE WAS NO RESOLUTION. Total waste of four hours. I hope you have an update episode when there are answers to all of the questions.
Dec 12, 2020Very well done! Loved it!
Dec 11, 2020Incredible first time directed documentary, Madison shot this so well and I definitely cried a few times feeling for him and his family and how much this affected and continues to affect their lives. Dying to know what else was found out about his mom's murder in the police documents.
Dec 11, 2020Can't believe it's this kids first film, it's a must watch. Had me engaged the whole time.
Dec 10, 2020It's a dive into a deeply personal journey of a family's grief. Yes, you have your true crime, but his ability to create a vivid image of his late mother makes it very real, and not just entertainment. I think that's important for these types of documentaries. That people's take away is that it's not just a story, that these are real lives and real feelings. You truly emphasize for them and that journey isn't over.
