Once Upon a Time

Critics Consensus

The addition of a Frozen subplot feels like a marketing angle, but Once Upon a Time Season Four shines, adding more layers to an already complex story.

Piggybacking off of the success of Frozen in theaters, Once Upon a Time Season 4 does not waste any screen time with the sisters Elsa and Anna. Showing the character development of both without taking away from the main storyline, and in fact adding to it, Elsa and Anna are not only a segway into what's to come, but a great family dynamic that shapes the main characters into who they are the next season.

Okay, so to all of the critics who didn't like this season, I have to say. They were probably using Frozen as a way of gaining some publicity but the season wasn't that bad. I'll admit it was Ouat's best season but it was pretty good. We learned more about Emma's past and about how she felt being a lonely kid alone in the foster system. Plus I think most of the fans would have been very upset if they had cut out such a huge fairytale completely out of the plot. I mean it's FROZEN how could you not put that in the storyline. It's basically the most popular Disney movie ever and it gave the writers a lot of things to mess around with because the movie wasn't (unlike many Disney movies) about romantic love i.e. man saves woman from something terrible. This let the writers mess with that storyline and apply it to Ouat. Part of why the show is so compelling is because of its strong female lead who still has that blond princess hair. So even though they could have done better with this season, it was pretty good and I think a lot of what people are saying isn't really valid. The second half of the season was better. We learned that Snow and Charming aren't completely hero's which makes their character more complex and interesting. Plus the romance with Hook and Emma was super interesting and it made me happy that Emma was finally starting to find love again after her trauma in season 3. Also the whole idea of sisters from the Frozen half of the season was really interesting because of the friendship between Emma and Elsa and how in some sort of weird twisted way it made a sort of sense which it what made it so interesting. That we as the viewers were think from the point of view of the villain and empathizing with her. The fact that the writers could make us do that means that it's really well written. Of course they've done that with every season but in the first season Regina had done so many terrible things by that point though even though we didn't completely hate her because of her past we still mostly hated her. Pan was complete evil and so we're the people working for him, and season 2 was a lot of important background info and Emma dealing with the realization of her past and what would now be her future as the savior. My point is we've never REALLY sympathized with the villain to that extent before.

A horribly cheesy show that is cloying enough to make you feel Disney is suffocating you with it's desperate and unoriginal script writing. It borrows from 100's of other, good, scripts because this show has nothing to say that other good writers haven't said before.

I was apprehensive about Season 4 since it was taking on a plot of a movie that had recently come out. However, the casting job was fantastic for Anna and Elsa (possibly even better than the cartoon character). Emma's character had the most development in this season and it paid off going into the drama of season 5.

FROZEN just no the cast is back and the character and storys feel okay at best it picks up later on in the season but dealing with the death of one of its main characters from the last season it struggles to find its place

I loved Elsa & Emma's friendship and the blossoming romance between Emma & Killian. The rest of this is just too much to unpack from Regina guilting/vilifying Emma for saving a woman while she fails to realize her own part in this to Zelena getting away with rape. Oh and the Charmings are baby snatchers? That seems like that would have been a secret for the Echo Caves but ok...

    Frozen plot is a blast.

Perhaps one of the most “mixed opinion” seasons of the ABC Fantasy-Drama, Season Four is actually quite a fun shake up on the show, in this Oncers opinion. If you’re not a fan of Disney’s Frozen, you’ll probably have trouble swallowing the visually heavy “Frozen-over” Storybrooke that is the first eleven episodes of the Season. If you give it a chance, however, the arc features wonderful surprises featuring LOST alum Elizabeth Mitchell, flakes with pieces Fromm Hans Christian Anderson’s original fairy tale, The Snow Queen (the basis for the Disney ice sisters). The characters do a nice job of moving both Emma and Regina’s stories forward. The back half of the season is more “the Once Upon a Time twist on classic films” feel. While it relies more of Disney mythology than past seasons do, ONCE UPON A TIME, Season Four features some delightfully nostalgic moments, impressive casting and new realms without the commitment of spending ten to eleven weeks away from Storybrooke. It also features the fan favorite two hour season finale “Operation Mongoose Part One & Two”; in this fan’s opinion, the gold standard for OUAT finales.

Why are people hating on season 4 so badly? The first half was not the best, yes, but the second half was kind of good. I liked the complex story lines, and the happy endings being earned to villians. And we also learn that Snow and Charming aren't heroes, no matter what they say.

this season got a bit annoying at times but anna is hilarious at times so... that helps and that smoke effect is getting a bit old
