New beginnings abound during the drama's fifth series, including a new baby for Crosby (Dax Shepard) and Jasmine (Joy Bryant). Meanwhile, after being declared free of cancer, a reinvigorated Kristina (Monica Potter) decides to run for mayor—a decision that doesn't sit well with Adam (Peter Krause), who's still worried about her health. Amber (Mae Whitman) gets engaged to Ryan (Matt Lauria), and her decision to commit at such a young age causes concern for mom Sarah (Lauren Graham). Critic Reviews for Parenthood Season 5

All Critics (12) | Top Critics (5)

Family dramas always have been one of television's most difficult genres to do properly, without getting too sweet, too overwrought, or much too predictable. Parenthood, like Friday Night Lights, is as good as the family drama genre gets.

Sorry, Team Mark fans, I was just never able to get on board with Sarah's (or anyone else's) infatuation with him...But regardless of how I feel, Sarah is instantly smitten when they have a meet-cute at the high school's parent night.

There was a scene in last night's season-five finale of Parenthood that, for me, demonstrated what this show is capable of when it's striking all the right poignant, textured notes.

One of the things that I have always loved about the NBC series is how unflinching it has been since Max's diagnosis about the effect his condition has had on his long-suffering parents and, by extension, the entire Braverman family.

Yeah, there's a lot of good stuff here, and it ends with the double whammy of a military homecoming combined with a surprise proposal, but it's also an episode that features Kristina deciding to run for mayor in a moment that made me say, "What!?"

Change is not always easy to embrace - even good change. And that fellow Parenthood fans, is where we get our weekly drama.

The show did a nice job balancing the stories, even if some of them weren't that solid. That has always been a plight of the show.

It's going to be an exciting year on Parenthood.

On a show with a big cast like this, the premieres have to do a lot of expository heavy lifting, but any hour that can give us the Amber/Ryan moment is fine by me.

No show makes you feel better for turning into a blubbering mess. It's great to have it back, regardless of the night.

Moments of intelligence and revelation never add up to long-term character change or even the slightest revolution in family dynamics.

Man, is it ever heartbreaking to watch.

I LOVE this show. Definitely my favorite. Amazing cast and story lines. I only wish it aired earlier so I didn't have to stay up late to watch it. (No, it cannot wait until the next day! :-)

I almost had a heart attack when I thought this show might have been cancelled. I am thrilled at how Season 5 has panned out. I love that Joel's character is being developed more, and Mae Whitman is just shining as a true dramatic actress! This family reminds me of my own, and I love all of the stories interwoven with its ups and down.
