Critics Consensus

Thanks to a talented and well-matched cast, Raising Hope largely manages to balance crude, absurdist humor with moments of charm without languishing in one or exploiting the other.

Critic Reviews for Raising Hope Season 1

Some episodes also push too hard to be zany, serving us thirty minutes about a cult that lives in a Winnebago. But when the tone clicks, the show is both ridiculous and moving

What we have at present is a little too much bubblin' crude.

You know what to expect from a show like Raising Hope: Lessons will be learned, diapers will be gross, the subject of breast-feeding will be milked for all its worth.

Fox's best comedies are always off-center. Raising Hope forgets to stay there.

You can probably tell this is not your average sitcom.

There may be a smaller number of top-notch newbies this season, but Raising Hope, a celebration of parenthood and childhood, of small joys and big struggles, is certainly one of them.

Plimpton's Virginia is a powerhouse of perfect timing, priceless delivery and deadpan reactions, she's reason enough to watch all on her own. However, everyone else excels at their own brands of humor, too.

I firmly believe Martha Plimpton is actor gold and therefore will watch anything she is in. However, Lucas Neff and Garrett Dillahunt quickly grew on me as the season continued. Yes, I am hooked.

Plimpton is the standout here, creating a character who is at once brittle but also more empathetic beneath her hard shell.

"Raising Hope" will leave you feeling better about the state of the network sitcom. It's kicking and screaming.

Fun, quirky and has a lot of heart.

So pleasantly surprised. Netflix tried for a year or two to get me to watch this before I finally gave in. Really didn't think I was going to like it, but was hooked almost from the very start. One of the very few sitcoms that I have/will watch all the way through more than once.

Pleasantly surprised by the fresh and inventive ideas in this show. There are wonderful details hidden in the writing about the characters that I really appreciate. Quirky and delightful. Lots of fun.
