Review: Season 1 (2014)

Season 1

Critics Consensus

The subversive Review lures viewers with a seemingly innocuous hook and gradually reveals a disturbing commitment to its high concept, making for one of the darkest - and uproarious - of comedies.

Critic Reviews for Review Season 1

All Critics (15) | Top Critics (8)

With every passing week it becomes clearer what an incredible arc star and creator Andy Daly has planned for the season.

It's the dad-like squarishness of Daly, who created and executive produces Review, that solidifies the series and makes it so uncommonly entertaining. Forrest has created a hell for himself, one that's being broadcast in weekly installments.

The results are hit-and-miss but often very funny. Daly has a high-speed sensibility that doesn't sacrifice intellect for the sake of a joke.

What makes Review so good is Andy Daly's cherubic face and earnest portrayal of Forrest, paired with such bleakness.

Oct 16, 2018 | Full Review…

It's a strange and somewhat twisted program, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being the funniest show to premiere in 2014.

Oct 16, 2018 | Full Review…

Review feels... hindered by its unusual presentation, but the radically morose "Pancakes, Divorce, Pancakes" suggests a serious ambition for the show, one that might ultimately overcome these flaws.

Oct 16, 2018 | Full Review…

The mix of over-the-top and realistic is odd, but it's also funny and fresh.

Oct 15, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The show becomes a painfully hilarious but melancholy study of the detached appreciation of life getting in the way of life itself.

Oct 16, 2018 | Full Review…

Forrest gives two of these pointless segments a one-half star rating, and that's being generous.

Oct 15, 2018 | Full Review…

There's an underlying social commentary in the fundamental premise, but it's one that never gets even remotely explained.... There's a nagging sense that Review represents a squandered opportunity.

Awesome, best thing on tv in a long time. Each episode's silly & usually ridiculous experience being reviewed gets expanded to show the sometimes terrible repercussions to Forrest MacNeil's life. Couldn't wait to see what happens next, will Forrest spiral down in flames, or somehow recover to soaring heights of greatness & fame?

Review is a dark comedy about a nerdy workaholic who "reviews life itself," such as what it is like to be addicted to cocaine. His life falls apart as he subjects himself to these experiences, yet he stays committed to his work, hoping he will eventually achieve greatness.

A wonderfully depressing journey about committing to the wrong things.

Andy Daly is really great. Always have loved Andy Daly. It's the beginning of what could be a potentially great show. The highlight by far was the review of divorce, as the potential of the review show format really expanded.
