It doesn't feel like audiences ever ask for these promises of "darker" and "edgier" follow-up seasons, yet they still come. Is it so much to ask for just a consistently good season?

It's also always been the kind of show that enjoys messy twists and dramatic character revelations.
All in all, this was a solid episode. I like what they're doing with the tone of the show, and the tension works, but the Black Hood reveal was lame.
After an entire half-season of shock and terror (trademark Birdemic), we finally learned the true identity of the man behind the mask.
Since this is the midseason finale, I will forgive the cliffhanger twist. We need something to keep us hooked when Riverdale comes back in January 2018.
Christmas has come to Riverdale!! And while comfort and joy would usually be the mood of the season, this episode picks up right where we left off: with heartbreak, drug dealers, and a murderer still on the loose!
So rarely do we see shows' midseason offerings lean into their story the way "Silent Night, Deadly Night" did.
With Riverdale not returning until the middle of next month, tonight's midseason finale was seemingly custom made to keep people talking in the interim. Mission accomplished then, as there is a lot to chew on here.
