It sounds like an urban legend, but as New Yorkers go about their daily routine, a band of urban miners are toiling away far below. They're the sandhogs, the crews who build water and sewage tunnels, subway systems and bridge footings, all vital elements of the city's infrastructure. The job pays well, but the work is so dangerous that the sandhogs lose, on average, one man for every mile they complete.
