Saving Grace: Season 1 (2007)

Critic Consensus: Saving Grace, though trying to balance too many elements all at once, shines through with Holly Hunter, combined with some outstanding scripts that master the show's dark tone.

Tv Season Info

Grace Hanadarko (Holly Hunter) is a hard-living, self-destructive detective in Oklahoma City who begins a gradual spiritual awakening in the first season of this gritty crime drama. In the opener, she's involved in a drunken-driving accident that leads to an encounter with a tobacco-spitting angel named Earl (Leon Rippy). Throughout the season, Grace's department and police examiner Rhetta Rodriguez (Laura San Giacomo), who is Grace's best friend, investigate various major crimes, while Grace deals with her family's connection to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and accepting Earl's guidance.

It's simply a pleasure to watch Hunter work.

Meanwhile, Saving Grace has a radiance that's part magic-hour cinematography, part post-New Age spirituality, but mostly Holly Hunter, small and scampering and draping her uncombed hair across the screen.

Saving Grace is overdone, but not run-of-the-mill. Same goes for its electrifying star, who chews the scenery like it's beef jerky. Atta girl.

This is not a shoot-the-moon, wholly unique story, but it's comforting and thoughtful.

The divine Grace offers stronger characters and better stories than many other summer series.

Only an actress of sublime abilities could lift this material from the downright silly to something intriguingly watchable. As she searches for either her sanity, her salvation, or both, Ms. Hunter does that and much more.
