Sean Saves the World: Season 1 (2013 - 2014)

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Though Sean Hayes is a gifted comic actor, Sean Saves the World is a mostly conventional sitcom whose efforts to squeeze humor out of Hayes' frenzied antics are more tiresome than funny.

Tv Season Info

The first and sole season of this sitcom follows the life of Sean Harrison (Sean Hayes), a divorced gay man whose world is flipped upside down when his 14-year-old daughter, Ellie (Samantha Isler), suddenly moves in with him on a full-time basis. Sean must learn to balance his demanding career and ambitions with building a relationship with Ellie, all while trying to keep his overbearing mother, Lorna (Linda Lavin), at bay. Sean's work life and personal life are closely interconnected, with his friends and co-workers being one and the same. His best friend, Liz (Megan Hilty), often provides support and care to Sean and Ellie in their daily lives, which can be a source of jealousy for Lorna who loves to coddle her son and granddaughter. Sean's boss, Max (Thomas Lennon), and fellow co-worker Hunter (Echo Kellum), are constantly getting involved in all sorts of wacky situations. Sean also finds himself at the center of comical plotlines, including blind dates, entering a ballroom dance competition with his mother, and pretending that his dry cleaner is his boyfriend. Portia de Rossi, Guy Pearce and Craig Ferguson make guest appearances.

Sean Saves the World has a good heart but could use a little saving itself.

Sean pretty much saves nothing.

When Burrows focuses his camera on the family, particularly the rich relationship between Hayes and Lavin, it actually soars. But the show's strange insistence on spending half of its time at the office rankles.

The bad news is that Hayes isn't so much gay as he is neutered. And Sean Saves the World has the archaic look and feel of an '80s show.

For better or worse, Sean Saves the World is exactly what he wants it to be -- an old school, joke-loaded, histrionic showcase for himself.

Sean Saves the World, starring Sean Hayes as a single gay father, is remarkably familiar.

Watching Hayes play off Lennon's ridiculous personality as boss man Max is incredibly entertaining

I made it through about 10 minutes before the extremely loud laugh track helped me decide this comedy wasn't worth saving.

Sean Saves the World has all the cast members needed to make a stellar show and yet somehow it doesn't quite work.

Sadly, this version of Sean isn't likely to save anything.
