A dysfunctional family moves from the city to a small town after Patricia "Pat" Phelps, a former "wild child" who became famous through writing a raunchy female empowerment novel, is caught cheating on her husband. In an attempt to rebuild their family, they move into a house where terrible atrocities have taken place. Nobody seems to suspect anything odd except for Pat, who is convinced she is either depressed or possessed. But soon, the demons haunting the family's new home begin to appear much more real.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Shining Vale's uneasy mix of comedy and horror can be transparently try-hard, but Courteney Cox's saucy performance gives this genre mashup a glitter of promise.

This comedy-horror hybrid is dark, rich, brutally frank at times and corrosively funny. Go to Full Review

Bolstered by a star turn from Cox and some fun throwbacks pitched alongside new takes on horrors past, this messy but fun genre mash-up makes for entertaining viewing. Go to Full Review

Maybe “Shining Vale” will finally bring Light, and Cox, the Emmy recognition they both have so richly deserved for years. Go to Full Review

Bolstered by a terrific cast, especially Courtney Cox, Shining Vale may not offer anything new - but it's exciting, funny, and suspenseful enough that it's easy to recommend. Go to Full Review

SkyRo P @TheMovieSearch 01/11/2025 Shining Vow, Season One, available on the Max app, is one of the most captivating and entertaining shows I've seen in a long time. From start to finish, the first season was so creatively crafted that I found myself completely immersed in every moment and detail. Courtney Cox delivers an exceptional performance that cements her as my second favorite actress of all time. She embodies the role of a sociopathic author haunted by a ghost with remarkable depth and nuance. Cox's ability to bring a fresh and unique take to her characters is truly impressive, especially given that many actors from Friends seem to play similar roles in their careers. She stands out by showcasing her versatility and creativity in every performance. Greg Kinnear shines as the husband, bringing humor and depth to his character throughout the series. His talent for balancing comedic moments with dramatic weight adds richness to their relationship, making it a compelling part of the story. On the other hand, Gus Birney portrays the daughter, but I find her character a bit perplexing. There's something about her portrayal that feels off; she seems overly aggressive and sexualized, which doesn’t quite resonate with me. I’m left unsure about my feelings toward her as an actress or her role in the series. Dylan Gage plays another unusual character, and I find his presence in the show to be somewhat confusing. The casting choices seem a bit off, as they could have explored different aspects of his character rather than emphasizing his physical appearance in a potentially negative light. His storyline, which includes some uncomfortable themes, is a bit offputting. Despite these critiques, the character dynamics are engaging, and the overall storyline is gripping. I found it hard to look away as I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. The acting, directing, storytelling, and scripting all come together beautifully, resulting in an incredibly well-crafted series. See more Mike @RT18459641 12/03/2023 One of the best shows I've watched in years. The uncertainty of whether or not we're watching a mental illness or something evil brewing is fun to watch and entirely unpredictable. Give us a third a season. See more Adam W @RT29809424 11/26/2023 They stole my life with my wife and made it into a show! You must watch this with your partner! This is in my top 5 series ever! See more Andrei D @RT74856639 11/05/2023 Needs more comedy and some new ideas See more Ceasar S @Ceasar554 03/02/2023 Absolutely loved it. Actual laugh out loud moments, and a mystery you want to know about. It doesn't have any typical politics ( Im looking at you, American Horror Story ) Its just a lot of fun, and characters you will really like. I didnt expect to like them, but I do. I hope to see a lot more of the Phelps. See more 07/25/2022 I'm very confused about whether I liked this show or not, being a fan of the horror-comedy genre. It is kind of like if the ridiculous demon sub-plot in Insatiable got its own TV-series. As a horror show it doesn't work, but I doubt that was the intention to begin with. There's some genuine comedy in there, and any show that goes off-the-rails and completely bonkers with each episode is always good in my book. Episode 7, in particular, was a highlight and it had some serious laugh-out-loud moments. Overall, I guess I'd give it 4/5 stars. See more Read all reviews
