Space Force

Critics Consensus

An all-star cast and blockbuster-worthy special effects aren't enough to keep Space Force's uneven blend of earnestness and satire from spinning quickly out of comedic orbit.

Critic Reviews for Space Force Season 1

All Critics (95) | Top Critics (30)

Together, Carell and Malkovich forge a charismatic pair that could carry even more episodes than they already do... Also helping to elevate the serviceable comedy is the gleaming production itself.

Space Force is not exactly embarrassing -- everyone involved is too talented -- but it is shockingly unfunny for a show made by people who are so talented.

May 29, 2020 | Full Review…

But there is a lack of vision in the show they devised, as it veers awkwardly between farce and drama, spoof and romcom. It qualifies as the year's biggest TV disappointment so far.

May 28, 2020 | Full Review…

The massive irony is that this [Space Force] doesn't seem like it has some grandiose plan either. But it's telling of its team's charisma that despite many things going wrong, Space Force is still a success.

"Space Force" isn't toothless. But it could use more bite.

May 27, 2020 | Full Review…

So strange and ill-conceived and ill-timed that not even Carell's avuncular bonhomie can save it. For all its cinematic trappings, Space Force is a series with a single joke running through it, and that joke is American idiocy.

Jun 1, 2020 | Full Review…

Much like Space Force itself, it's clear to see that no expense has been spared by Netflix to help launch this new comedy. But sadly, it never quite takes off in the way they might have hoped.

May 26, 2020 | Full Review…

Space Force is a show that brings more grins than laughter, and in several occasions this tepid sensation translates directly to the lack of interest that the rest of its secondary characters create. [ Full review in Spanish]

Aug 18, 2020 | Rating: 5/10 | Full Review…

Space Force will just be another throwaway piece of cultural ephemera, forgotten in the endless gaffes and episodes of Trump's Theatre of the Absurd.

Jul 24, 2020 | Full Review…

It's the same question posed to the real Space Force as to the TV show version - who actually wants this?

May 26, 2020 | Full Review…

The real star of Space Force is Malkovich. He is brilliant as the sarcastic, intelligent, and witty voice of science and reason in an otherwise bizarre plot.

May 26, 2020 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

The characters that are obvious depictions of real people (including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nancy Pelosi) are ham-handed caricatures. But when it works, Space Force's strength is its on-the-ground relationships.

Audience Reviews for Space Force: Season 1

Not the worst show that I've ever seen, but far from being the best.
  • Apr 04, 2021
I stopped during the first episode because it wasn't doing anything for me, then went back and rewatched it. I was glad I did! It was worth giving it a second chance. Once the storyline is laid out, it takes off from there. It is funny with characters that pull you into their story. It is a fun show that evokes feelings and keeps you wanting more.

Space Force feels lopsided in its star power. John Malkovich, Steve Carrell, and Jimmy O. Yang all hold their own, but the rest of the cast feels lost or underutilized. The jokes range from top-tier clever all the way down to cringe-worthy and the finale leaves the characters in situations that approach shark jumping. That being said, I do strangely want more. In the vein of other Greg Daniels projects I'm hoping for marked improvement next season. Both The Office and Parks and Rec were nearly unwatchable during their first seasons when compared to their later selves. Fingers crossed that this Greg Daniels project is following the same trend.

How is this not the most popular comedy on TV right now?
  • Feb 09, 2021
Jokes are slapstick, feels like a waste of good actors and premiss.
  • Feb 08, 2021
This show seems to have all the pieces. Good actors, great base story, nice settings etc. If they just managed to assemble those pieces correctly it could be better than good. As it is now though, it lacks in both tempo and humor. They seriously need to add some creative power among the writers. This reminds me of "Last man on Earth". The premise for these shows are such fantastic ideas - with endless opportunities of developing the stories - and still they manage to fail completely in the execution. I still recommend it for an entertaining binge watch.

I thought this show was great! Steve Carrell and John Malkovich are so hysterical is these characters! I was blown away when I saw what the critics were saying, and I don't agree with them at all. This is a must see! Apparently I'm not the only average person who thinks so, as most people I know loved it!
  • Nov 10, 2020
Has everything to make a good show but still falls flat making it that much more disappointing.
  • Sep 30, 2020
The first season of this Netflix comedy series was really funny. Steve Carell, John Malkovich, Diana Silvers, Fred Willard, Tawny Newsome, Noah Emmerich, Jimmy O. Yang, Lisa Kudrow, Jessica St. Clair, and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job in this movie. The plot to the series is entertaining, dramatic, and humorous. If you're a Netflix member, you should definitely check this series out. It's worth watching.

Surprisingly interesting! pros: - some surprisingly funny and "sharp" jokes - John Malkovich - Steven Carell - John Malkovich - unique theme - John Malkovich - John Malkovich cons: - sometimes it feels like here only this pair Malkovich-Carell and they steal the show, I think it would be better with at least +1 main character - some jokes a little bit "low" - final is weird 3.5John Malkovich/5 Recommend.
