Space Force: Season 1 (2020)

Season 1
Space Force

Critics Consensus

An all-star cast and blockbuster-worthy special effects aren't enough to keep Space Force's uneven blend of earnestness and satire from spinning quickly out of comedic orbit.

Critic Reviews for Space Force Season 1

All Critics (90) | Top Critics (25)

So strange and ill-conceived and ill-timed that not even Carell's avuncular bonhomie can save it. For all its cinematic trappings, Space Force is a series with a single joke running through it, and that joke is American idiocy.

"Space Force," we do not have lift off.

Space Force is not exactly embarrassing -- everyone involved is too talented -- but it is shockingly unfunny for a show made by people who are so talented.

But there is a lack of vision in the show they devised, as it veers awkwardly between farce and drama, spoof and romcom. It qualifies as the year's biggest TV disappointment so far.

May 28, 2020 | Full Review…

The massive irony is that this [Space Force] doesn't seem like it has some grandiose plan either. But it's telling of its team's charisma that despite many things going wrong, Space Force is still a success.

"Space Force" isn't toothless. But it could use more bite.

May 27, 2020 | Full Review…

Space Force is a massive misfire as the comedy flails from joke to joke, not knowing how to land. The Netflix show doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.

Jun 26, 2020 | Rating: C- | Full Review…

Space Force needs an identity other than "satire", because it is impossible to satirize America right now.

Jun 22, 2020 | Full Review…

Carell and Malkovich shine. Even if the show feels arrogant and some jokes don't work, some situations feel freshly funny. [Full review in Spanish].

While it attempts to be timely and relevant, throwing jabs at a questionable leader and his mission of returning to the moon, Space Force leans on cheap humor and shallow narrative constructions.

Audience Reviews for Space Force: Season 1

I want a refund of my time please. I finish the whole season hoping it was gonna pay off, begging for my time to not have been wasted. But it was, its, just, so, bad. If it wasn't for the all star cast, no one would even know this existed. I think that not even the cast's family would watch this awful show.

Man, that was lazy and poorly written. Very disappointed because I was as excited for this show, which is rare. But it looks like Steve Carrel is a one trick pony and I find it tedious now after 18 years of it. Plus, something felt lame about the supporting cast. It felt like all the folks from about 10 sitcoms in the oughts and tens who weren't good enough to get their own shows were repurposed as basically themselves in some mash up called Space Force. I can't stress how much Steve looks totally bored and exhausted. He must have been doing other things instead of being solely focused on the show. This show pushed me over the top and my netflix ran out Jun 28th. I'm glad. I was just giving money to some dude to make his own crappy shows and movies and then take away my ability to give any quality feedback through reviews.

Uneven writing, plot lines that drag and dead end.... the critics have it right

This reminded me of those Morning Radio Show Hosts that try, try, try to be so funny. But every joke and every gag misses the mark by a mile. They fake-laugh at each other then go home a cry into their couch cushions.

As a Chinese person, I think the main story line the U.S. China rivialry part is quite good. Other parts can be improved and more focused.

I was entertained! What more do you want?

As a whole 2.5/5 Stars. The ending just didn't work and felt rushed. There were a few hysterical episodes, but too many plot holes in the finish that had you not wanting more.

Space Force is a well written tv show with plenty of satire and humor to help the tv show along the way. Although, I would not say that the show is consistently hilarious but the uncanny parallels to what is happening in real life is always funny. The whole cast puts in good performances to keep everything fresh. If you like space and want an easy digestible show I would recommend Space Force.

Not quite satirical humour. I enjoyed it and hope there's a season 2.
  • Jun 26, 2020
A lot of good ideas, just not executed well. Acting is fine, moderately funny. Literally the only reason I can give it two stars is John Malkovich. Unfortunately as great as he is in this show and as an actor, he's the only thing that keeps me interested in the show. Had he been the focus of the show maybe it could have been better. I don't see myself watching Season 2 if there is one.
