Caught this when they were showing it on Pluto TV for free. Really wanted to like it, but outside of Pike and Spock every other character is just not interesting.

There have been many Star Trek series and permutations trying to trade on the glory and love and pageantry of the original Start Trek series. Many of the ones I have seen have been very good. They all try to forge their own way and stay true to the Star Trek Universe created by Gene Roddenberry in the 1960's. This is the first one that actually manages to really, really match the excellence of the first. It does something really interesting and difficult in that it creates backstory and doesn't fail as the Star Wars Prequels did by making the prequel seem more advanced than the predecessor. They capture the essence and tone of the Enterprise. They make you feel like this is a natural precedent to the TV show. The characters and stories are great. The character of Christopher Pike is well played as a man of character and leadership who is not William Shatner's iconic, James T. Kirk. Now, time and gain, he does seem to take inspiration from Kirk, but it is not an attempt to be him. Additionally, some of the side storylines of Spock and Shura require you to just accept the fact that you never heard these things about them before. That is ok. The stories are a little weak, but that is ok too-they were in the original. There are many call backs that work. The visuals, the costumes, the cinematography are great. I loved this.

I do appreciate that they showed us they are capable of emulating the Trek look of the 80s & 90s, but this takes place BEFORE Star Trek TOS & it is not time-appropriate. It's also as family-unfriendly as Discovery, so you cannot watch it with your kids. Nice job of making the old TOS uniforms look less cheap & tacky, & casting an actor who looks & sounds more like Spock than anyone else has post-Discovery, but he still has that JJ Abrahms reimagining stink to him. Not a fan of the garish eye-hurting red lights all over the bridge. The costume faithfulness is limited to a few characters with other uniforms looking more appropriate for Kirk's latter years. Also, only a handful of characters look anything at all like their counterparts from the Star Trek pilot episode. Deep Space Nine did it better. I do appriciate them continuing the old trend of aliens looking overly-human & resisting the urge to turn this into a CGI cartoon.

Major time line errors in season 1 episode 10. Also obvious errors even in the time line of the same season. Kirk was still on the enterprise prior to the hypothetical timeline so Kirk not knowing Pike or Spock was completely false. Let alone the academy time would of still happened with the test Kirk rigged. Paramount is unbelievable with pushing a false timeline.

This is the best Star Trek series to come along since Next Gen. It's done in a way that's very reminiscent of the original Kirk series and I gotta say, it just hits a sweet spot for me. The casting is excellent. All of the characters are engaging, likeable and relatable. Ethan Peck as Spock is perfection and Nurse Chapel's character has been fleshed out in a brilliant way. The best thing about this show is that it isn't overtly political or socially preachy. It's just excellent entertainment and I hope it stays that way.

I am so impressed by Strange New Worlds. Not only that, but I am pleased and surprised that Star Trek is alive and well still today. First season was amazing and I wanted more!!! Second season... Gotta do a review for that one too cuz it deserves it. If you haven't watched it - here's your invite! Come on over and join in on the entertaining stories, the absolutely wonderful and amazing cast and enjoy the many adventures of the crew before ToS.

        (1) A leading weakness is a limited amount of genuine novelty in the events in the episodes. Spock's nightmare scene flopped badly from this angle. (2) Pike was captain before Kirk, so presenting Pike's Enterprise as so much better designed inside than Kirk's Enterprise looks odd again and again. (3) I keep thinking that each scene background must be CGI as the actors never seem to be in touch with the background images I see.

Loved the Season 2, Ep 9 musical episode. Spock, La'An and Uhura were really good. No one stunk it up, but they just stood out. Eponime chills during La'An's big number.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" - Season One Review Star Trek's storied universe welcomes "Strange New Worlds" with the promise of a fresh journey that treads the line between nostalgia and innovation. The season effectively distances itself from the challenges posed by "Discovery", with improved character development and a narrative that doesn't heavily borrow from its predecessor. The portrayal of Captain Pike emerges as a beacon of hope for the series, though the foreshadowing of his eventual fate feels overwrought. Meanwhile, Rebecca Romijn's Number One, while armed with some strong lines, doesn't convincingly project the aura of authority essential for her position. The writing seems to hit the right beats, but the delivery occasionally falters. Overall, Season One of "Strange New Worlds" feels like a step in the right direction, even if there's room for improvement. It hints at the potential to be a worthy addition to the Trek pantheon, provided it remains respectful of its legacy while forging its unique path.
