I will say that I may be a little biased as I watched it when it came out during the pandemic and lockdowns so I related with the initial premise. This is not your typical post apocalyptic series - no, not every episode is some white-knuckling, fast paced thriller, although don’t misunderstand, there’s still plenty of that. But it’s the intricate storylines, the characters and the way they seamlessly weave it all together, that’s what makes it so special. It’s one of those rare gems that pulls off so many different genres/concepts at once - drama, thriller, psychological, fantasy, love, family, human nature, and even humor. It’s intimate, raw, and heartfelt. Not to mention, the acting and the writing is phenomenal. They say that good taste is subjective and, normally I would agree but if you don’t like this series, you very well might just objectively have bad taste. Young Kirsten was very well acted, and circular view of her current day self years later quite poignant. Novel structure. The traveling actor troop is unnerving, disorganized, almost psychotic that creates quite of bit of tension, as you wonder who survives and why. Anyway not for everyone, but if you allow the series space, and are patient, a rewarding view in the end. After the first episode (which was entertaining only because of the hints of the disaster to come), I found myself bored and confused and not interested. It bounces around in time way too much and there is excessive babbling that feels pointlessly melodramatic because it lacks context due to the goofy timeline. It doesn't help that the actors are mostly unfamiliar (I guess they're mostly Canadian?), not particularly talented, and, sorry to say, generally so unattractive you don't really want to spend a lot of time looking at them. Would have been better if they'd stuck closer to the book. The biggest departure right off the bat was that in the book Arthur and Miranda we're from a small Canadian Island, but in the series they are Hispanic and Black, which makes no sense. I guess this is one of those shows where only the female mind can appreciate all the melodramatic yapping. So if you lack that chromosome, don't bother. See more Casper V. @RT06087742 Mar 18 I'm eight episodes into this. I'll finish the season because my wife is enjoying it a bit more than I, otherwise I would have quite a few episodes ago. I appreciate using am apocalypse a a backdrop for exploring human emotions, and this show has many of the components I would normally enjoy. The choppy storytelling is counterproductive, at least for me. It's a frustrating viewing experience thar has led to be not connecting with one character so far. It ends of feeling like a disjointed collection of vignettes. I say this as someone who loves art house cinema of all kinds. I'm sorry, but this bored me to tears, and I feel bad for the actors, just of whom performed wonderfully. Not their fault it's presented the way it is. See more Read all reviews
