What to Know

Critics Consensus

A modern noir steeped in the classic tradition, Sugar could use stronger clues to go along with its ample style, but Colin Farrell's cool performance keeps things compelling.

Billed as “genre-bending,” spanning film noir, sci-fi, and Westerns, with some global gangster intrigue thrown into the mix. What it really is, though, is a surprisingly good crime drama with an awful lot of unnecessary adornment Go to Full Review

It’s like a checklist of the genre, but it’s light on its feet and proceeds smoothly enough that it doesn’t feel like a mere checklist. Go to Full Review

Please. People want to see the show you are trying to make, not an endless warm-up for that show. Go to Full Review

Sugar would still fire on all dramatic cylinders if it were solely a brooding detective story. It's all so good from the writing and cinematography to the steadily increasing emotional stakes and nuanced performances of its cast. Go to Full Review

Sugar is a series as addictive as sugar itself. A refreshing addition to the television noir canon that honors its roots while carving out its own path with a singular twist that’s bound to divide audiences and spark conversation. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

David S @LordoftheDance Jul 23 Loved it. Great character. Fun story. Very unique. Loved the noir aspects, the twists make it a lot of fun. See more Wink D @RT22905158 Jul 22 This is interestingly done. I approve of the "old school" techniques used to film and edit the episodes. In limited quantities, this is a good move. If this were to become mainstream I'd have to start giving fewer stars. Spider Noir is a good example of it working out as well. See more Nicholas P @RT88054743 Jul 19 Great performances and surprising twists. See more Jim S @RT26083920 Jul 18 Just finished watching Sugar on Apple TV+, and I really enjoyed it. The story kept me interested, but what really stood out was the style. Every episode feels incredibly polished, with beautiful cinematography, creative camera work, and a cool neo-noir vibe that gives the whole series its own personality. Colin Farrell is excellent, and the show has a unique look and atmosphere that’s different from your typical detective drama. If you appreciate shows with as much style as substance, Sugar is definitely worth checking out. Fun twists. Definitely worth the watch. See more Laurence S @Lazza Jul 16 Excellent TV and very engaging. Farrell is fantastic. The detective story, per se, is entertaining, but the embellishment adds a layer of intrigue, for the sci-fi buffs at least. It’s hard to stop watching. See more Ken F @kenthelawyer Jul 13 Starts out well enough. But at about episode 5, it goes completely off the rails. Collin Farrell is a fine actor and he does a good job with what he’s got to work with. I really wanted to love this series but I think I’ll pass on season two. See more Read all reviews
