This anime series features a virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game, which shares its name with the show's title (abbreviated SAO), that is released in 2022. The game allows people to control their in-game characters with their minds when using a Nerve Gear helmet. One day, upon logging into SAO, the players discover they cannot log out and learn from the game's creator that they must defeat the final boss. If a player's avatar dies in the game, though, their body also dies in the real world. One player, Kirito, sets out to beat the game on his own, progressing through the game over two years, during which time he befriends a female player, Asuna, with whom he falls in love. The duo eventually confronts the in-game avatar of SAO's creator, hoping to free themselves and other players from the game. Over time, Kirito realizes that the situation is a conspiracy that runs deeper than just SAO and has penetrated other games.

01/15/2021 Just as great as the first one! See more 11/20/2020 As mentioned in my review of season 1, this season replaced the second cour of season 1 as my standard for how bad a show can be. The first cour of this was physically painful to sit through. Most of the second cour was so forgettable I literally have nothing to say about it, with the exception of the Mother's Rosario arc. Although I could see the end coming a mile away, I think this could have been a very powerful scene in a better show, and it stands above the mess that is the rest of the series. I don't think it's a coincidence that all my favorite parts of SAO happen when Kirito is gone. See more 10/23/2020 The gun world in SWORD ART ONLINE Season 2 is a change of pace from the two fantasy worlds of season 1. There's a lot of cool action and the story migrates from season 1 as well. The special SAO Gun Gale Online is a little better with action. The difference is that the main hero, Kirito, is in this one and gets to use his earned god-mode. See more 09/17/2020 The plot line was good but the season itself was unnecessarily r*pey. Most of it seemed to be a twisted form of fan service. See more 08/08/2020 The second season is not that great... they should have stopped at season 1, i feel thats beacuse the main goal of the series is completed. See more Read all reviews
