Tarzan: Season 1 Reviews

Fact is, this "Tarzan" series dies on the vine.

The WB's Tarzan is dark and humorless.

Me critic. You stink.

It's all rather dull.

So far, the writing and plotting in "Tarzan" are fairly unexceptional, adhering to typical TV formulas. Maybe that will change, maybe it won't. Then again, viewers who tune in to ogle the frequently shirtless [Travis] Fimmel are unlikely to care.

The opener... incorporates an uninvolving crime plot with a serial killer torching homeless people - an unnecessarily grim addition to the hour.

Lighthearted escapism loses out in this derivative show, which plays like a superhero adventure crossed with a dark cop show... Putting Tarzan on the trail of a serial killer marks a comedown for him. How did he get to this sorry spot?

As for the Ape-Man, [Travis] Fimmel fits in with a long line of hard-bodied pretty boys. He delivers corny lines like, "This is how I hunt," but also does a convincing job of looking wounded and brooding in heavy rains.

It's almost too obvious that Tarzan would be made, as he will be here, a crime fighter. With his mythic origin, impressive chest expansion and special powers, he's the very model of a modern superhero... But it's disappointing too.

It's one thing that [Travis] Fimmel can't act, it's another that the script is flat-out stupid and the rest of the cast isn't exactly pulling a De Niro.

It becomes clear that New York, when seen through Tarzan's nobly savage eyes, might itself be -- ready? -- a jungle. And while there's nothing new about this comparison, it's stimulating to see it come to life.

Look it ain't Shakespeare, but it is fun in the way that "Hercules" was fun, in the way "Xena: Warrior Princess" was fun.
