Critic Reviews for Ted Lasso Season 1

All Critics (43) | Top Critics (14)

Ted Lasso is a pleasure, which took me by surprise... Turns out, it's a sweetly cheerful comedy, and the Ted Lasso character, a dumb-American buffoon in the ads, has been made into a big-hearted, optimistic, even charming guy.

"Ted Lasso" could benefit from a bit more from Keeley and from trimming a few minutes from most episodes, but Lawrence crafts such a welcoming space it's hard to complain too much about overfilling it.

The story's gooey nature is fair game, but it's nearly maddening by how unfunny it is, specifically being based around someone the world could use more of.

Aug 14, 2020 | Full Review…

Sudeikis does a great job of taking this one-time character to a new level. It feels honest, rather than a skit, and I found it to be the perfect prescription for an otherwise despondent year, offering some much needed levity.

Sep 14, 2020 | Full Review…

I am pleased to report that Ted Lasso - the first three episodes of which are available now, with new ones dropping on Fridays - is good. Very good.

Aug 25, 2020 | Full Review…

It might work, might not, but it's a glossy production, with Richmond made to seem very Notting Hill, and Sudeikis is likeable enough.

Aug 24, 2020 | Full Review…

Sudeikis' charming creation is the best thing about this trans-Atlantic tale.

One of the best new comedies this reviewer has seen - and incredibly uplifting too.

Whether you're on board yet or not, I'm going to do the same thing for you. The Lasso Way is what you need to survive in 2020, and I'm going to keep shoving you in the right direction.

Aug 20, 2020 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

Episodes four and five are probably the best of the season and far better indicators of the show's overall quality.

Aug 19, 2020 | Full Review…

An all-rounder, team player Ted Lasso has the warmth and wit to win over the stoniest of hearts, with a few nutmegs down the field and could be a potential goal of the season.

Fun. Light-hearted. Warm. Inspiring. This is not just a show about sports. At its core, it's about empowerment, friendships, relationships, and family (both figuratively and literally).

It's the best show I've seen in a while, clearly aimed at people like me... I love the comedy of Jason S, I love football (the real kind), and I love England, so it ticks all the boxes. It's very well written and manages to be hilarious, intelligent, original and touching at the same time, which is difficult.

So refreshing. An absolute delight during the pandemic. Hilarious, whimsical, and the feel good content we needed right now.

Just fantastic. what a good show!

Not a sitcom but a very pleasant, positive, lite drama that is really well written and acted. The humor, like the drama, is in the characters, who tend to be more complex than you'd expect from the premise. No need to know English soccer; no annoying laugh track or straining for one- liners. Love triangles, redemption arcs, and good feelings surround three dimensional characters. Reaches its stride after 3 episodes.

Best show on TV. Sweet and funny.

This is one of the best shows on television today. It is nicely written and has great story, heart, drama, humour, mix of characters, and at its core ... it is a show that simply makes you smile. We need more of this type of television. I look forward to Fridays every week just to watch, and I haven't felt this way about a show in a long time (probably since the West Wing).

Ted Lasso is Sudeikis at his finest. We might be staring at one of the greatest shows in recent years right in the face. There is an unsuspected warmth and freshness that is much needed in these pandemic times. The cast is amazingly chosen and portrayed. The team behind Ted Lasso has managed their way into binge worthy episodes with incredible splendor in writing and creating rich characters that drive the story all the way home. Diamond Dogs Forever.
