At the helm of the USS Nathan James en route to the Arctic, Capt. Tom Chandler learns that the destroyer will be in the best possible place -- a circumstance his crew must utilize -- to save humanity from extinction. A virus has wiped out more than half the population since the ship embarked, and despite orders from the U.S. government to return, Chandler -- believing home is now a shadow of itself -- decides the safest place to develop a vaccine is at sea. That task falls mainly to virologist Dr. Rachel Scott, a civilian originally assigned to the Nathan James to study birds. "The Last Ship" is based on a novel by William Brinkley and is executive-produced by filmmaker Michael Bay ("Transformers").

You're not going to find a better example on TV of cinema's quintessential summer blockbuster, and it's more worthy of your time than lots of recent big screen offerings. Go to Full Review

It's nice to have nuance, but sometimes you just want to watch someone with a crew cut ask in earnest, "What's the status of the RHIBs?" Go to Full Review

There's a formula for post-apocalyptic dramas, and, for the most part, The Last Ship is staying on course. Go to Full Review

Tarek A @tarekali 07/22/2023 The Last Ship is a gripping drama of high calibre. I have consumed many apocalyptic TV series, but this one stands apart with epic casting and production values. It is ironic we just got through a truly global pandemic, and this show spun up right before that. Eric Dane plays a brilliant captain, charged with guiding this last floating beacon of hope in a world awash with threats, domestic and foreign. Rhona Mitra plays the excellent counterpart, a scientist charged with developing the cures for a world plagued to the brink. Like every apocalyptic series, the end times bring out humanity's worst. We see this brazenly in both seasons 1 and 2 when the strongest who survive prey on the weakest through false narratives, whitewashing evil with pretentious virtue. It is precisely in such dark times that the weak rely on the strength, courage and morality of the crew of Nathan James, to defend the helpless. Season 2 brilliantly showcases how foreign and domestic enemies can undermine the noblest of efforts. I loved how season 3 expanded the chess board to the rest of the world. Old geopolitical games never get old, even in a newly decimated world. Certainly, old demons will take advantage of a global pandemic to advance genocidal ambitions in order to remake the world in their bloody image. None of the horrors of this season seem implausible. But it's always the domestic internal enemy that hollows out and eventually collapses an empire from within. The terrible scars of each personal loss are felt, overpowering in the end, as so many sacrifices are made. Season 4 took the show in a new twist, bringing new meaning to the word double whammy, and highlighting the sanity in the logic of an evil genius, once again hell-bent on dominating the world and being remembered for posterity. The crew continued to show unity and perseverance, with some interesting new members being added. The naval battles did not disappoint in the least, showing brains not brawn always wins the field. The final season opens on such a beautiful note, the calm before the final storm, the elder warrior musing about his remaining missions in life, what did it all mean? Could we have done better? It makes perfect sense that the final conflict will be far closer to home, with a demonstration of the vulnerability of digital platforms. I loved the return to old-school naval warfare and tactics, minus the benefit of electronics and software. It is poignant and touching to see the seasoned warriors remembering lost ones, and having a semblance of closure at the end of this last bloody chapter, as they seem to put down one last demon of the old world in the face of a new dawn. It's certainly sad and expected that our valiant crew pays a terrible price in life, limb and soul as they near the end of their 5 years of battle. The philosophical musings and parallels to ‘Moby Dick' and ‘Old Man and the Sea' are quite apt and a welcome change. The military operations of the last season were just spectacular. The last 15 mins of the series were a haunting stroll down memory lane, what a feast. One of the most enjoyable series. See more 10/19/2019 easily the best season See more 10/19/2019 Season 2 is even better than the strong first season. Episode after episode, tension non-stop... Wow! See more 10/12/2019 Superb. the best tv series I've seen. Better than most great movies. Sincere congratulations to everyone who had a hand in making and presenting this series. If you never do anything else, you have done something very very special. You must be very proud. There are a few times when 'suspension of disbelief' is difficult due to silly mistakes in the script: - Just a few: 'Arab' terrorist escapees in Gitmo somehow have ALL their Arab gear ! (So laughable I nearly gave up right there...) Russian naval genius doesn't seem to understand basic obvious tactics. A ship runs out of water and seems to find it hard to obtain enough from seawater (I could do that in my kitchen - after 5 mins thought.) And sailors have been running illicit stills since they built the first boat. AND, You cannot tow and power a 10,000tonne Destroyer with a few parasails and some wind! etc. It's not THAT hard to produce an intelligent script and avoid such mistakes- just get an intelligent couple of people to review it BEFORE you spend all that money! All that said, Thanks for a truly great series. More, Please... See more 09/24/2016 Feels like I'm watching a recruitment film, low on plot, but plenty of flag waving. See more Read all reviews
