I didn't know I could cackle like a witch discovering a fresh supply of eye of newt, but cackle I could. And cry until the tears dried on my cheeks.
As realistic as the producers make it look, shooting improvised dialogue with handheld cameras in dowdy offices...it's always going to be farcical and ridiculous, because that's what the business of governing is like.
Audience Reviews for The Thick of It: Season 1
Jan 03, 2014Political comedy doesn't get much better than this, nor do I think it deserves such a tremendous attention to detail, with the snappiest dialogue you can find, aided by stellar performances, specially from the instable firecracker that is Peter Capaldi as Malcom Tucker and Chris Langham as Hugh Abbot. Why didn't I rate this any higher? ONLY 3 EPISODES?!?! ARE YOU JOCKING BBC?Francisco G Super Reviewer
Apr 28, 2016If you want to watch something that stresses you out and makes you uncontrollably laugh at the same time, this is it. Capaldi and Addison are amazing. End of.
Feb 21, 2016Set in a UK government ministerial department, we meet the people who work there, from the minister all the way on down. The minister is a bit of a buffoon, a trait that has not escaped the Prime Minister's notice. The PM has a man who keeps underperforming / errant ministers in line, an enforcer. That man is Malcolm Tucker, truly a man to be feared. Brilliant. A superb satire of British politics, with no sacred subjects or limits on language usage. Pretty much Yes Minister with edgier plots and heaps of (very creative) swearing. The series is made by the character of Malcolm Tucker and the performance of Peter Capaldi in portraying him. Hysterically funny in his intensity and over-the-topness and use (or abuse) of the English language. The creativity displayed in the ways Tucker finds in insulting people is off-the-chart brilliant. One of the most memorable characters in TV history. Created by Armando Iannucci, who, once this series had run its course, turned his attention to US politics. The result was the equally-hilarious Veep.
Jan 09, 2016Absolutely flawless. I've seen this series so many times and the constant nods to real political events, the incredibly funny and detailed writing from Iannucci and the central Peter Capaldi performance make this my all time favourite comedy series.
Jan 08, 2016Same rating for all the series, this is my all-time favourite comedy; I consider it to have the funniest, most rib-cracking lines in a tv show ever, and everyone owes it to themselves to watch this.
Jul 04, 2014Incredibly witty and uncommonly entertaining. Season 1 of The Thick of It starts with confidence and never lets up from there. Excellent performances from Peter Capaldi, Chris Langham, and Chris Addison. Great stuff! 8.5/10
