It was the most elegant and somehow gentle Oscarcast I can remember, unfolding smoothly with well-chosen words, original production ideas, and host Ellen DeGeneres finding the right mood and pace to weave it all together.

Ellen Degeneres was fantastic. She was funny, kept the long show going, and has this wonderfully vibrant charisma that just leaps off the screen.
November 4, 2019
The show was its usual overlong muddle of snappy humor, tired shtick and way too many tribute montages, though Ellen DeGeneres made a likable, funny host.
November 4, 2019
The 79th Academy Awards season was a decidedly ho-hum affair, with most of the major awards going to their predicted recipients, no spectacular upset and few genuinely memorable moments.
November 4, 2019
It was an odd night for Oscar. The speeches were short, the orchestra wasn't too pushy too much of the time, and the host was hilarious, dithery and sweet; the academy should put Ellen DeGeneres on permanent retainer.
November 4, 2019
Hostess Ellen DeGeneres was a breath of fresh air with a chatty, low-key and agreeably daffy debut.
November 4, 2019
DeGeneres was loose, offhand and all-ages funny for the show, tipping the Academy that maybe "edgy" was not the way to go for an Oscar host.

DeGeneres effected the perfect combination of pretending not to care while caring very much.
October 31, 2019
Overall, this was a kinder, homier Oscar celebration. It was a little boring and flabby, but well intentioned -- just like its host, Ellen DeGeneres.
October 30, 2019
DeGeneres was her usual casual, relaxed self -- but most of her jokes were more worthy of her daytime show than the Oscars.
October 30, 2019
Overall, Oscar remains a horrible waste of nearly four hours, superfluous Celine Dion included.
October 30, 2019
The only beneficiary of Ziskin's languid pacing was host Ellen DeGeneres, who got funnier as the night wore on. In the midst of this debacle, a chicken-crossing-the-road joke would have generated belly laughs.
October 30, 2019
There was hope that DeGeneres might redeem the telecast, but her patter was not nearly as funny as the times she's hosted the Emmy Awards, celebrating television.
October 30, 2019
Pleasant and innocuous but hardly exciting, DeGeneres forgot the primary Academy Award host directive: It's not about the host.
October 30, 2019
Once again this year, the broadcast ran long... It was worth the wait to see Scorsese finally win.
October 30, 2019
Provincial, check. Sedate, you got it. I'd be tempted to go so far as snoozy, but there were enough moments to get the blood flowing.
October 29, 2019
It was a crisply managed telecast that ran flatulently long, an exercise in bogus modesty and sincere self-congratulation, a seamless celebration of celebrity in which the awards... flowed together in a viscous ooze of knowingness.
October 29, 2019
Ellen DeGeneres was a tepid host at last night's Academy Awards. With her wry, rambling, hemming-and-hawing style, she wanted to put everyone at ease; but instead, she put us to sleep.

Ellen did a great job, and Scorsese's moment was a loooong time coming, so the whole night felt very satisfying. All that and Beyoncé?

Given that many Oscar ceremonies begin with a killer opening only for everything to go downhill from there, Sunday's telecast was a refreshing change of pace.
